Smoke Signals 9 FEBRUARY 1,2011 Moirooiredl EOdleir Adult Foster Program A Place To Call Home i jjc Photo by Michelle Alaimo Don Day, Tribal Elder and tha Tribe's Sita Protection specialist, was presented with the 201 1 Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the Associated Students of Lane Community College in Eugene on Monday, Jan. 1 7. The award honored Day's work on the college's Native American Longhouse, his devotion and time given to the youth of Oregon and his work in archaeology to preserve the culture and traditions of the indigenous peoples of these lands. Day, pictured here in the longhouse's Hall of Honor, hand split cedar logs to make the paneling that covers the walls and oversaw the paneling. He also taught the craft of log splitting to a host of volunteers who helped with the project. Bobb creating design for float ROSE FESTIVAL continued from front page Jarvi9 said the contract was a great deal, allowing the foundation a three-year reprieve from having to find a sponsor. "Spirit Mountain has been part of the festival since 1996," Jarvis said. 'They are a great partner." Tribal Council member Steve Bobb Sr., who attended the Jan. 19 event at the casino, also cited the fact that Portland is located within the Grand Ronde Tribes' ancestral ceded homelands as a major reason why the casino committed to spon- soring the event. Bobb is currently creating the design for this year's casino float, which will incorporate Native Amer ican elements with the parade's theme of "Carnival of Roses."
