General Council meeting Sunday, Jan. 10 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center ftarrere 2 JANUARY 1,2010 Dear Smoke Signals: Regarding the Tribal-state discussions about dealing with our difficult times, it was good to learn of the creative ways different Tribes are man aging without continually depending on the federal government. As an Elder of 89 years, I know how it was during the Depression of the 1930s. It was worse than what we are experiencing so far today. There were no credit cards, which was good. You could not spend what you did not have. And you could not depend on "the government" to pay your utility bill. After all, the government is the taxpayer, and the taxpayer was broke. And health care? What health care? Cheryle Kennedy hit it right on the button for Indians when she said "we are the only ones who pre-paid for our health care" by ceding land in the 1850s to the federal government in numerous treaties that promised health care. We all have to do for ourselves what we can instead of depending on an undependable federal government. Bessie Baugh Antelope, Calif.
