General Council meeting Sunday, Oct. 4 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center Dear Smoke Signals: What an amazing journey I was able to experience during this year's Tribal Council campaign. I am sending my heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends and membership for all the support, words of wisdom and encouragement given to me during this year's election process. To the other 17 candidates, I enjoyed listening to your vision for our Tribe and am pleased to have made several new friends. I would also like to congratulate Toby, Val and Cheryle for their recent victory. I feel so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful Tribe. I am look ing forward to next year! April Campbell Roll 1260 Dear Tribal members and CTGR voters: I'd like to congratulate Toby McClary, Val Sheker and Cheryle Kennedy on their election to the Grand Ronde Tribal Council. I hope each of you work hard to fulfill the needs of the membership and work to strengthen our Tribal government, our programs, but most importantly qur Tribal members' lives. During this campaign season, the members consistently talked about change: 1) Changing the enrollment ordinance to repair split families; 2) Improving communication with the membership; 3) Working on economic development to diversify our economy; and 4) Providing access to cultural education programs to name a few of the topics. During the election process you made promises. I hope you'll be fearless in fulfilling those promises. With the U.S. recession and its impact on our investments and our primary revenue source, Spirit Mountain Casino, it's time to take a serious look at our government. You'll be making very dif ficult decisions. I hope you'll find ways to involve the entire membership, regardless of where they live, in those decisions. At the Halle rLeno picnic this summer, some of our Tribal youth wanted to have a voice. Find a way to involve them. Our Elders always have words of wisdom; involve them. Tribal members across the country want to be heard; involve them. It's time to use our Tribal resources to better the lives of all of our members. I hope you'll embrace new ways to do this so that our entire community has a voice in the decisions to be made. I'd also like to thank my supporters in this election. Some people very close to my heart supported me and I'd like to thank them: Wayne and Sharon Hanson (my parents), Kayla Leno (my daughter) and Rhonda Fraser (my sister). There were many others and I appreciate each and every vote. A special thank you to Kathleen Tom; you were a friend and mentor, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness and guidance through this process. . i For those of you who didn't support me, I hope I show you in the next year that I have the passion, courage, experience and strength to be a leader in our Tribe. We'll all watch with open hearts as the new Tribal Council begins their work and shows us, with their actions, their intentions. Let's hope that they pleasantly surprise us in ways that we cannot even imagine.
