Smoke Signals 13 OCTOBER 1, 2009 Charlene Jeanette Freeman Sept. 29, 1947 - Sept. 9, 2009 Tribal Elder Charlene Jeanette Freeman, 61, of Grand Ronde was born in McMinnville, Ore., to Jack Graham and Carlyne Riggs. She touched so many hearts and lives in her time here with us. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She now joins her husband in heaven and will always be in our hearts. She would want a smile on all the faces who read this. Close your eyes and see her smiling at you and know she loved each and every one of you. Funeral services were held Sept. 4 at the Grand Ronde Tribal Cem etery with a meal following in the Tribal Community Center. John Henry 'Laughing Wolf Simmons Dec. 6, 1950 - Sept. 22, 2009 Tribal Elder John Henry "Laugh ing Wolf Simmons, 58, departed this world to be with his savior Jesus Christ on Sept. 22, 2009, in Eureka, Calif., after a spirited battle against cancer. . He was born Dec. 6, 1950, in Dallas, Ore., to Edgar and Marie (Daniels) Simmons and was a proud descen dant of Rogue River, Coastal Salish, Kalapuya, Umpqua and Iroquois Indians and Irish. "Grandpa" lived . his life serving the Creator. Not a perfect man in any sense, he's best remembered for his infectious sense of humor and his love for the Univer sity of Oregon Ducks, Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees and any meal with chili. John attended Madras High School in Madras, Ore., and met his lifetime soul friend Tamara Tomlinson (Jacobo) and married in 1972 after attending the University of Oregon for a short time. He spent a lifetime working in various locations across Oregon and Washington. He spent the early part of his adult life on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and always talked fondly of h"is memories and friends there. Throughout his travels, John touched many lives with his kind and compassionate heart, laugh and smile. He was a loving and caring father to his two sons, Jeff and Kevin, and his adopted children, Da vid, Melia and Stephanie Jacobo. He spent a considerable amount of fruitful time in the end with his family and took great pride in giving each of his 14 grandchildren a nickname. He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar; mother, Marie; brothers, George, Raymond and Michael; sisters, Gloria and Ramona; nephew, Marcus; niece, Rosie; and great-niece, Sasheen. He leaves behind Tamara Jacobo; two sons, Jeff (wife Monica) and Kevin (wife Robin), David Jacobo (wife Brandi), Melia and Stephanie Jacobo; brothers, Frank, Tyrone, Bob, Joe, Jimi and John Stevenson (Simmons); sister, Renee; grandchildren, Mathew, Michael and Kiana Simmons, Kaelynn, Makai, Shasta and Seqhiya Simmons, Sasha Mc Farland and Selena Jacobo, Samara and Ukiah Scott, and Lyric, Mary Jane and Malakie Lowrey; and numerous nieces and nephews from the Grand Ronde and Muckleshoot (Wash.) Reservations. Services were officiated by Jan Reibach Sr. Community services and a meal at the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Tribal gymnasium were held Sept. 24. Anyone with a song, story or laugh was encouraged to share. A memorial Mass at St. Michael's Church in Grand Ronde was held on Sept. 25 with graveside services at Grand Ronde Cemetery and a community meal and giveaway at the Grand Ronde Tribal Com munity Center following. Pallbearers were Tyrone Simmons, Tyson Simmons, Jon George, Chris Holiday, Brian Jackson, Donnie Stevenson (Simmons), Keith Stevenson (Simmons) and David Jacobo. Honorary pallbearers were Tyrone H. Simmons, Jimi Simmons, Frank Simmons, Joe Simmons, John Stevenson (Simmons), Bob Simmons, Donald Simmons, Bill Simmons, Walt Quinn, William Quinn, Jack Quinn, Bobby Mercier, Joe Lowry, Vernon Kennedy, Ricky Jackson, Dr. Tim Nicely and all other friends and family we may have missed. Ramona Faye Langley Jan. 4, 1933 - Sept. 13, 2009 "Mona" Ramona Faye Langley, 76, a resident of Sheridan, died at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009. She was born in Bagley, Minn., on Jan. 4, 1933, the daughter of Archie and Hazel Cheney Keller. She was schooled in Orr, Minn., and moved with her family to Oregon as her father was a logger in her early teen years. She worked in the berries and can neries before moving to California. There she lived and worked at TRW Electronic as an inspector of Navy parts. She lived in California 25 years before returning to Oregon in 1994. She married Tribal member Ivan Louis Langley Jr. in 2000 in Myrtle Creek, Ore., by the Tribal medicine man, a distant relation. She enjoyed collecting dolls, shooting guns and spending time in the great outdoors. She loved to travel and took her grandchildren to Disneyland and the Grand Canyon. She loved her family very much and had strong Christian values. She is survived by her husband, Ivan; daughter, Marcia Ostenson; son, Chuck Pharis II; brothers, Bill and Jim Keller; sisters, Darlene Butler and Shirley Langley; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Viewing occurred Sept. 17 at the Da'llas Mortuary Tribute Center. Funeral services were held Sept. 18 in the Grand Ronde Tribal gymna sium. Interment occurred in the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery.
