4 JUNE 1,2009 Smoke Signals 'jr- .i .... a CapiftoD DDDvocaDOirD lift : er 2004 The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's Cultural Re sources Department, in cooperation with the Mission Mill Museum Association, collaborated on the reprinting of Dr. Harold Mackey's book 'The Kalapuyans," long one of the most accessible resources for information and history on the Natives in the Willamette Valley. 1999 The Grand Ronde Tribe played host to almost 200 Tribal leaders and representatives who were members of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians. They met at Spirit Mountain Casino and Lodge for the annual mid-year conference. 1994 The Tribe was awaiting an amendment to the Grand Ronde Reservation Act to pass, which would end the Interior Department's confusion about gaming on land along state Highway 18. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act prohibited Tribal gaming on land that was not held in trust before October 1988. However, Tribal attorney Michael Mason said, 'The exception to this rule is land that has been part of land restored to a restored Tribe." 1989 ' The Tribe held its first timber sale from the reservation. The Western Skies sale sold about 3,695 mbf of timber (mostly Douglas fir) for approximately $1.3 million. 1984 The Tribe thanked Diana and Ron Stogsdill for the carpet ing they donated for the Depot Office, and Penna Mobil Homes for its assistance and cooperation in obtaining the carpet for the office. Yesteryears is a look back at Tribal history in five-year incre ments through the pages of Smoke Signals. CULTURAL GATHERINGS JUNE 6: BEAVERTON HIGH SCHOOL'S 5TH SPRING ANNUAL INTERTRIBAL POW WOW.
