4 MAY 15,2009 Smoke Signals Retirements honored 2004 Six Tribal youth went to the Northwest Indian Youth Con ference in Rapid City, S.D. The trip, arranged by the Grand Ronde Youth Social Services Prevention Department, allowed the youth to network and learn leadership skills, as well as see Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse National Monument and the Badlands. 1999 A survey by the Oregon Tourism Commission named Spirit Mountain Casino as the No. 1 tourist attraction in Oregon with more than 2.5 million visitors. Other casinos in Oregon were listed among the top 12 attractions. 1994 Tribal member Tracy Olson, Smoke Signals editor, was one of 10 minority journalists to receive scholarships to the 18th annual Investigative Reporters and Editors National Conference in St. Louis, Mo. "This is the first time I have ever won anything," she said. 1989 Tribal Council selected Russell Leno, Wilmadene Butler, Blanche Lillard, Val Grout and Darrell Mercier to serve on the Cem etery Committee. Members had been working to prepare Grand Ronde Cemetery for the Memorial Day observance. 1984 The Interim Council had been working with Gary Forrester, director of the Native American Program of Oregon Legal Services, in drafting the Tribe's constitution and bylaws. Members of the Interim Council planned to visit other Tribes to study their constitutions and watch other Tribal Councils in action. Leno's last day as senior groundskeeper at the Tribal Cemetery was March 1 7, and he worked for the Tribe for almost 22 years.
