2 MAY 1,2009 Smoke Signals NOTICE Monthly Tribal Council Wednesday Meetings DATE TIME Wednesday, May 6 ..r ..5 p.m: Wednesday, May 20 5 p.m. Please note that these times and dates are subject to change if needed. Call Dakota Whitecloud, Tribal Council Relations Coordinator, at 503-879-1309 to confirm. General Council meeting . Sunday, May 3 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center Dear Smoke Signals: I recently read a letter in our local newspaper concerning the conduct of a Tribal Council member and wondered why there are no consequences for "bad behavior." Our General Council and community members have been aware of and been victim to several incidents of "bad behavior" by some of our council members not only here at home but at othejr community meetings as well. j Being greeted by a council member (unless in executive session) with "Are you a Tribal member?" is inappropriate, racist, irrelevant and un professional. I recall there were many nonTribal people who were instrumental in helping us accomplish our goal of Restoration. NonTribal people working for the Tribe and living in the community are equally concerned and even passionate about a successful future for our Tribe. At one time, there was an Ethics Committee formed and the very people who were responsible for our Restoration carefully fashioned ethics ordi nances for our Tribal Council members to abide by. For some reason, the committee is no more and our Tribal Council are left to "police" themselves. This obviously doesn't work. In my opinion, an independent Ethics Committee should be formed to assure that the ordinances are enforced so council can be justly held ac countable for their actions. If these ethics ordinances were enforced, perhaps we could all focus our efforts on the betterment of our community. Just my opinion. Thank you for your time. Virginia Roof Roll 1607 Dear Smoke Signals: Here is it three weeks since the last Smoke Signals was published and I have not received my paper. In Hawaii, standard rate postage takes the slow boat. I talked to Dean Rhodes in the Smoke Signals office last week and he said that the reason is to trim costs and save jobs. I would never argue with those reasons, but I really miss the paper! One idea I had is subscriptions. Would it be too much trouble logisti cally to offer a subscription rate that would make up the difference in postage? Judith Pettibone Roll 717 See page 10 for more letters. Tribal offices will be closing at noon Friday, May 22, and be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. w m A A - t I mm 9 .. 1 W - ,. mm mm f J j ' l! 1 y 'nostra1 ovine Mi I J . m tL, V w A - -iTti ii " ' X. s 1 Ad created by Georyt Vaklet SCDDC 3803)900 PUBLICATIONS OFFICE 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR 97347 1-800-422-0232, FAX: 503-879-2173 Web site: www.grandronde.orgnews E-mail: newsgrandronde.org SIOBHAN TAYLOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS DIRECTOR 503-879-1920 flobhan.uykrgrandron(t.org SCARLETT HOLTZ PUBLICATIONS SECRETARY 503-879-1453 Karlea.hotugrjndronde.org GEORGE VALDEZ GRAPHIC DESIGN SPECIALIST 503-879-1416 george.valde2grjndronde.0rg CARLA ROBERTS CENTRAL PHONES 503-879-1447 cjrta.robertigrjndroadf.ort KRISTEN RAVIA PUBLIC AFFAIRS SECRETARY 503-879-1418 krlstw.ravlasrjndronde.org JUSTIN PHILLIPS PAGE DESIGNER 503-879-2190 Justin.phllllps(ramironde.org MICHELLE ALAIMO PHOTOJOURNALIST 503-879-1961 mkhelle.abbnograndronde.org DEAN RHODES PUBLICATIONS COORDINATOR 503-879-1463 dean.rtiodesgrandronde.org RON KARTEN STAFF WRITER 503-879-4663 ron.karttngrandronde.org SHELLY KENT CENTRAL PHONES 503-879-5211 sheHy.ltentgrandronde.org DEADLINE PATE ISSUE DATE Tuesday, May 5 MAY 15 Wednesday, May 20 JUNE 1 Friday, June 5 JUNE 15 Friday, June 19 JULY 1 Monday, July 6 JULY 15 SMOKE SIGNALS, a publication of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Com munity of Oregon, is published twice a month.
