A- v i : v4 1 K-5 SiflDnmec Pirogorainn There will be a limited number of openings for the K-5 Summer Program. The program will run from Monday, June 8, to Friday, Aug. 14, 2009. Applications for students who attended kindergarten-fifth grade during the 2008-09 school year can be picked up or requested from Youth Educa tion beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, May 1. Completed applications, along with the June payment of $50, can be re turned to Youth Education from May 4 at 8 a.m. through May 7 at 5 p.m. Eligibility requirements state that parent(s)guardian(s) must be in school, working or in a training program during the hours that the student participates in the K-5 Summer Program or the student must meet the requirements for a "SpecialHigh-Needs" student. The K-5 Summer Program is open to all K-5 Native American youth, with preference given to Tribal andor "SpecialHigh-Needs" youth. For families who qualify, a sliding fee scale is available and enrolled Tribal youth may use the CTGR Youth Sponsorship. Lilley Cancer CURE Program is a summer internship in research mentorship training at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health Sciences University. It is designed to offer research experiences to students from socially and economically disadvantaged populations from the Portland metropolitan area. The long-term goals of this pro gram are to give hands-on research experience and science exposure to disadvantaged students in biomedical research and other health-related programs. Program participants will participate in defined projects and will be expected to create two formal reports - one with their mentor's work, and one based on their own research. Work deemed competitive will be sub mitted to national and regional student research programs. In addition to participation in daily activities in their preceptor's laboratory, trainees will meet weekly during the summer for a series of seminars that address a wide range of scientific and ethical issues in various areas of biomedical research. Participants are compensated $10 per hour for eight 40-hour work weeks in addition to public transit passes for the eight-week period.
