12 APRIL 1,2009 Smoke Signals ' ' I Veda Rose Gamez July 17, 1952 - March 5, 2009 Tribal Elder Veda Rose Gamez of Oakland, Calif., joined the Creator on Thursday, March 5, at home surrounded by family. She was born on July 17, 1952, in Oregon City, Ore., the daughter of Lorene Smith. Veda Rose lived in Sandy, Ore., until the age of 3 and then moved to Oakland. She enjoyed com ing home to Grand Ronde during summers to visit family and pick berries with her cousins and friends. Veda Rose was a devoted employee at the Native American Health Center for more than 15 years. She was a drug and alcohol counselor and then moved up to director of substance abuse services. She was instrumental in the creation of the Gathering of the Lodges, an annual celebration of recovery, where hundreds of people and recovery lodges would participate. Veda was such a strong woman warrior not only for her family, but also for the Bay Area Native American community. She has touched so many people with her kind heart and with her words of experience, which helped them to walk the right path in recovery. Veda was recently honored by KQED and received the 2008 American Indian Heritage Month Local Hero Award. She was an avid Oakland Raiders, A's and Golden State Warriors fan. Her love for these teams was contagious. She is survived by her mother, Lorene Smith; children, Manuel, Mar cus and Monique; brother, John; sisters, Kelly and Gina; grandchildren, Manuel IV, David, Samuel and Michael; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, great nieces and great nephews. Preceding her in death were husband John Ortega and grandson Adam Gamez. A beautiful service was held on Wednesday, March 11, at Chapel of Chimes in Oakland. Brann, 87, was born on Sept. 28, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Alonzo and Lydia Brann. He walked on Fri day, March 13, 2009, at Life Care Center in McMinnville. He grew up in Minnesota. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army, where he served in the Philippines during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, he went to work for the railroad in Brainerd, Minn. He retired in 1985 and moved to St. Helens to be closer to his family. He met Tribal member Jessica Sher wood in Neskowin, Ore., and later married her in Chapala, Mexico, on March 10, 1988. They lived in Mexico for a year and a half and then moved to Reno, Nev., in 1989. In 1995, they moved to Oregon, settling in Grand Ronde in 2002. He loved to read and enjoyed going for walks. He also enjoyed playing cribbage with his grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Brann, and daughter, Sharon Miner. He is survived by his wife, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Private services were held. Macy & Son Funeral Directors of McMinnville handled arrange ments. Frances M. Duggan Dec. 31, 1934 - March 13, 2009 Tribal Elder Frances M. Duggan, 74, a resident of Grand Ronde, died at her home on Friday, March 13, 2009. She was born on Dec. 31, 1934, in Newberg, Ore., to Francis and Ma mie (Lnngley) Snider. She married Jerry Duggan on Feb. 20, 1951, in Stevenson, Wash. They moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where they resided for 15 years. Later they lived in Seattle, Wash., for 15 years before mov ing back to Grand Ronde in the late 1990s. She enjoyed gardening and walking on the beach, collecting unusual sen shells. She also collected stuffed animals and had a large collection of stuffed cats and frogs. She will be remembered for her excellent holiday tnenls and her efforts to make her home clean and welcoming. She always enjoyed playing games of Scrabble and other board games She is survived by her husband, Jerry; daughter, Gaylene Duggan; sons, Clark, Matthew, Houston, Kevin and Mark Duggan; nine grand children and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons Jerry and Austin. Services were held Wednesday, March 18, at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Committal was at the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery. Tribe accepting Hatfield Fellowship applications The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is accepting applications for the Mark O. Hatfield Congressional Fellowship. Every year, a Hatfield fellow serves as an intern for a member of Oregon's congressional delegation. The fellow is selected from adult Native American ap plicants who are enrolled members of a federally recognized Tribe in Oregon. If there are no qualified applicants from Oregon, enrolled members of federally recognized Tribes in Washington, Idaho and Montana will be considered. The selected Hatfield fellow will intern in Washington, D.C., for nine months and receive a monthly stipend, relocation and travel expenses, and tuition for the American Political Science Association orientation. New for 2009, fellowship applications must be completed and submitted via the Internet. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, April 24.
