Smoke Signals 11 OCTOBER 1,2008 Dear Smoke Signals: I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all the attendees of the Chankal Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20. There was a good turnout and it was wonderful to be able to share about this remarkable site. What a special day it was! I'd also like to thank Tribal Council members Cheryle A. Kennedy, Chris Mercier and Kathy Tom for your presence and support at the event, and to express our thanks to all Tribal Council for your ongoing support in the return and restoration of the Chankal property. Chankal Celebration success was reliant on our contractors as well. Thank you to Strong Horse Construction for the remodel of the home and surround ing areas. Your crew did an amazing job and will be remembered fondly for your contribution. Also a special thanks to Greg Blankenship for all your dedication and hard work taking care of the fields and property cleanup. You work very hard and I can't thank you enough for all that you do for our department and Tribe. Thank you to Lonnie and Virginia Roof for an amazing meal! What a treat it was to be spoiled by the wonderful food you prepared for us all. You both did a great job. Thank you to all the following departments and employees for your sup port: Accounting staff: Debra Nolen, Linda Meyer, Dena Diaz and Melanie Eb ensteiner. Maintenance: Doug Colton and Mike Larsen. Smoke Signals: Ron Karten, Michelle Alaimo and Dean Rhodes. Procurement: Larry Leith, Nate Rolston, Rick Courtier, Kelly Herber and Kevin Mueller (sorry for all the dirty fleet vehicles). On a personal note, I would like to say thank you to my fellow Cultural Resources Department staff: Misty Thorsgard, Brian Krehbiel, Don Day, Courtney Terry, David Lewis and Eirik Thorsgard. It was very nice to see us all pull together so well and present this special place to our Tribe. What a talented group of people I get to work with. I feel great pride being a Tribal member and a Tribal employee. I apologize if there is anyone else I forgot to mention and, again, thank you to all. An gel la McCallister Roll 2793 Cultural Resources secretary Dear Tribal Members: To the 530 Tribal members who voted for me and believed in me, for all the marvelous, wonderful, thoughtful, considerate things you did for me, thank you. You all gave me one of the most memorable nights I won't ever forget. I won't give any names; you all know who you are. Without your love, support and caring thoughts when times got rough, I thank you. You really make someone feel special. Along with your trust in me as one of your Tribal Council comes great re sponsibility, which I take very seriously. I promise to treasure your trust and work hard for the membership to be a good steward of the Tribe's assets and to always represent all Tribal members when I make a decision. I'm looking forward to the next three years with great joy; we are so blessed with every good wish. I send my eternal thanks. To the other Tribal members who did not vote for me, I hope to earn your trust and confidence in the next three years. D Worn big prizes tour DneDipDimg wiDdlDiitfe! Help collect biological samples from deer and elk and your name will be entered into a drawing for six gift cards. 3 prizes for deer: $125 gift card to Sportsman's Warehouse 3 prizes for elk: $125 gift card to Sportsman's Warehouse Why: The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Natural Resources Division, in cooperation with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and USDA Veterinary Services, is collecting biological samples from deer and elk to learn more about diseases that may be affecting our deer and elk herds. Chronic Wasting Disease has not been detected in Oregon. We want to catch this disease early if it shows up in Oregon as it can have devastating effects on deer and elk populations. Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease is not known to be in the Grand Ronde area but has been detected in southwest and central Oregon. Samples will help determine where adenovirus is found in Oregon. How to participate: Allow the Tribes' biologists to collect samples of brain stems and lymph nodes from elk and samples of blood, brain stems and lymph nodes from deer. All samples must be collected within 48 hours of death; 24 hours preferred. Bring hunter-harvested animals to the Tribe's Natural Resources office at 47010 S.W. Hebo Road, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After hours or on the weekend, call 503-434-3604. If you are unable to bring an animal in we may be able to come to you to collect samples. Please contact the Tribes' biologists for more information. If the entire animal can't be brought in, please provide the heart for the blood sample and the head for the brain and lymph node sample. All parts can be returned after samples are taken. Hunters will need to provide the general location (within a mile) of where the animal was killed (to be used in the event that a disease is found). Your name will be entered in the drawing for each usable sample we are able to collect, up to two entries for each deer and one for elk. Fresh rond kills can be reported to the Tribe's biologists so we can pick them up for sampling. Your name would then be entered for any usable samples we collect from the road kill. Tribal and nonTribal community members are eligible to partici pate. Animals must be harvested legally. Drawing will be held at the April 2009 Fish and Wildlife Committee meeting at the Natural Resources office. Prizes are sponsored by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Fish and Wildlife Committee. The Fish and Wildlife Committee and Natural Resources Division thank you for your help in gathering information to help us maintain our deer and elk populations. Happy hunting!
