Smoke Signals 15 MAY 15, 2008 Honor Guard seeks past Veterans' Royalty The Grand Ronde Honor Guard wishes to honor all past Veterans' Royalty by having them attend the Friday evening Grand Entry of the Veterans' Powwow on July 11. Royalty members include Courtney Rose, Nikki Norwest, Ashley Tuomi, Leah Brisbois, Orrin John Allen, and Halona and Leland Butler Jr., and all current Royalty and any Tribal members who were princesses. "We would also like to invite all past Tribal Royalty to join us in the Grand Entry on Friday," said Veterans' Special Event Board Chairman Steve Rife. "Please come and wear your sashes andor crowns." Those intending to attend should RSVP to Billie LaBonte at 503-879-5342 so she can compile a roster for the master of ceremonies. ATTENTION TRIBAL MEMBERS The following committees and SEB's have vacancies: Culture Commit tee 2; Fish & Wildlife 1; Powwow SEB 1; Rodeo SEB 3. Tribal members can apply any time to serve on committees and special events boards. Dance practice sDafted Dance practice for upcoming summer powwows will be held in May and June in the Tribal gymnasium in Grand Ronde. Dance practice will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, and Sunday, May 25. In June, practice will be held 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 2 and 16, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8 and 22. Practice is open to all Tribal members. For more information, call Jackie Many Hides at 503-879-7724. Royalty participants and their parent or sponsor must attend all required events (powwows, parades, fundraisers, organizational meetings and oth ers). Absences can be prearranged with the Royalty Coordinator. Three unexcused absences will result in disqualification from Royalty. Royalty par ticipants are expected to stay for the duration of the events. This includes helping set up for events, such as meetings and parades, as well as dancing during Grand Entry, InterTribals and staying until the flags are retired unless pre-approved with the Royalty Coordinator. Participants are expected to speak in front of large groups of people. Royalty participants must be willing and able to dance. Remember: You are all part of a team and are expected to treat yourselves, running mates and others with respect at all times. Notice: New deadline date Notice: Age requirement change HoEEEQoXaassv Participating in Royalty court is an excellent opportunity for Tribal girls and young women to learn our traditions and powwow protocol. Participants represent the Tribe by attending powwows and various community events. We encourage all young woman ages 5-18 to join. Participants must pro vide their regalia. Serving on Royalty Court requires a considerable commitment from the participant and her sponsor; travel, fundraisers, classes, and meetings are required for all competing participants. Participants should have never been married and have no children. All must be enrolled in and currently attending a public or private school. All must be drug and alcohol free. Must have one year of powwow experience. Must have their own regalia, or be able to make their own regalia before the application deadline. Participants must be willing and able to attend all Veterans' events and be prepared to represent the Veterans and the Tribe. Must have a parent or sponsor willing to participate and attend activities with the girls and boys and provide transportation.
