Oaaaore Dear Smoke Signals: As a Tribal member and Elder, I appreciate very much the recent cov erage of unratified treaties regarding ancestral lands of the Tribes of the Grand Ronde. An additional coverage of other lands of the Tribes that are omitted in this article are those called the Tansy Point treaties, which were negotiated with Anson Dart, U.S. government agent on or about Aug. 9, 1851. These are also unratified treaties and preceded those of Joel Palmer, also a subsequent agent of the U.S. government in later years. The Tansy Point treaties were signed with nine Tribes of northwestern Oregon and were negotiated near Warrenton, which is near Astoria, along the Columbia River, and as I recall there is an old train track nearby. The nine Tansy Point unratified treaties cover the south side of the Columbia River and include all lands in northwestern Oregon. Yes, I and my family group were at that site many years ago and saw what is called Tansy Point on old maps. Please have someone look into this as another part of the Grand Ronde Tribal history. We certainly descend from the Tribes of northwestern Oregon, as well as all of western Oregon west of the Cascade Range of mountains. The Tansy Point treaties were negotiated before Oregon became a state. And it is a fact that Oregon became a state on Feb. 14, 1859, and Wash ington became a state in 1889 ... this history of the United States affects Indian Tribes everywhere, but is largely ignored for convenience. This is why the Indian Tribes negotiate with the U.S. government and not the states except on a limited basis. The states "inherited the Indian Tribes." Officially, the Tribes are in the care of the U.S. government and the states are sanctioned to negotiate with us. Claudette Parazoo Roll 2923 Tulalip, Wash. All Tribal offices will be closing on Friday, May 23, at noon and will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day.
