8 OCTOBER 1,2007 Smoke Signals Hanson named tto Salem Transit Board REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL KNVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING SERVICES The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Rondo Community of Or egon, the Nez Perce Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reserva tion, and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon ("the Tribes") are seeking professional environmental consulting services to assist the Tribes in analysis of CERCLA re lated site investigations and processes. The National Priority List sites for which the Tribes seek consulting services are located in and around Portland, Oregon. Essay contest seeks Native youth entries Reconnecting the Circle is holding its second national high school essay contest from Oct. 15 through Nov. 30 for students in ninth through 12th grade. The essay question, as well as contest rules, will be posted at www. reconnectingthecircle.com on Oct. 12. Ten students will each win $2,500 prizes. The essay contest is scheduled in conjunction with national Native Ameri can Indian Heritage Month and is run in conjunction with the National Congress of American Indians, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indian Country. Reconnecting the Circle encourages children and adolescents to share their experiences, explore facets of Indian Country, and seek accurate in formation on both historical and contemporary Native American topics. Shelley Hanson, director of the Spirit Moun tain Community Fund, was appointed Aug. 23 to the Salem Area Mass Transit District board of directors, representing northeast Salem. Hanson will serve until June 30, 2009. She grew up in the Salem area and received her master's in business administration from Willamette University. She is responsible for the Community Fund's strategic planning, program operations, budgeting and fiscal man agement. In addition, Hanson is a licensed real estate agent. Hanson's volunteer activities include numer ous boards and committees as a Grand Ronde Tribal member. She served three years on the board of the HOME Youth & Resource Center, and currently sits on the boards of the Mid-Valley Development Professionals, Potlatch Fund, Grantmakers of Oregon and Southwest Washington, and the Salem Convention & Visitors Association. The class will provide the framework for a successful business start-up. Tribal and community students can attend. Tuition is $100 and Tribal members can access Short Term Training for financial assistance. Classes will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 8, 15, 18 and 22, Nov. 5, 8, 15, 19 and 26, and Dec. 3, 10 and 13. Graduation is slated for Dec. 18.
