If Catherine Thursa Doss McCurry March 3, 1927 May 9, 2007 Born March 3, 1927 in Escondido, CA, Catherine Thursa Doss was born to Lee and Sarah Doss. She attended schools in El Cajon, CA. After marrying John McCurry September 22, 1946 Katie quit nursing school to begin their family of 7 girls and 2 boys continuing to live in the San Diego, CA area. The family moved to Oregon in 1963 settling in the Willamina area. They divorced in 1971. Katie worked hard to support her children. She taught them to know what true wealth was and that God would provide the rest. Katie enjoyed sewing, was an avid reader and loved game shows. She worked on several community benefit projects and helped orga nize the West Valley Planners to aid local jobless after the plywood mill closed. She had numerous friends, many of them from places she worked. To support her family, most of the work she performed ranged from hard to backbreaking. She lovingly cared for the ill and aged as a nursing aide, co-owned a local restaurant, worked in the plywood mill and ended her working career in the wardrobe department at the Spirit Mountain Casino in 2004. On May 9, surrounded by her loving children, Katie moved on to be with her Lord where she is free of pain and loved beyond imagina tion. Katie is survived by her siblings Margaret Kanta of Forsythe, MT and brother Lee Doss of Grand Ronde. Her brother Joseph Doss passed on in 1986. Surviving her are children and spouses Candia (and Chuck) Friesen, Eileen (and Tim) McCurry-Hays, Patrick (and Debra) McCurry all of Salem, OR; Sherry (and Red) Fitch of Dallas; Reenie (and Arlie) Kilgore of Sheridan, OR; Debora (and Robert) Mc-Curry-Armstrong of Carson City, NV and Michael McCurry of Cool, CA. Daughters Sheila McCurry and Kathleen McCostlin passed on in 1958 and 1998 respectively. Her legacy also includes 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. A memorial mass was held on Saturday, May 19 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem. Dorothy LaRose McKnight Lawe March 11, 1920 May 11, 2007 Tribal Elder Dorothy LaRose McK night Lawe passed peacefully on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the age of 87. She was born March 11, 1920 in Grand Ronde, Oregon to Thomas and Elvira (Langley) McKnight. Dorothy worked as a dieti cian for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the Phoenix Indian Hospital, Indian School and School District. She married Reynold Joseph Lawe in June 1938 in Seaside, Oregon. He preceded her in death in 1960. She enjoyed making baby blankets, bonnets, and booties, Native American beadwork including making the crowns and shawls for Tribal royalty. She was recognized by the Grand Ronde Veterans for her work. She is survived by her daughter Renee and her husband David Lane of Salem, grandchildren Julie & Reynold Lane, Toni & Becky Lane along with several other grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 15 in the Dallas Mor tuary Tribute Center with burial followed at the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Willamette Valley Hospice and to Betty and Cletus Mittin for their love and care of Dorothy.
