NEW LIBRARY HOURS: Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (closed Monday - Friday Noon - 1 p.m.) Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Tribal Library has added over a hundred new titles to the Library collection over the past couple of months. Many additions have been made to the children and youth areas that enhance the Summer Program theme, Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales so the stories are mainly about animals and the incredible things they do. We are currently cataloging some new audio books that we just purchased for the young adult area that are on cassette and CD. New titles include: Kavik the Wolf Dog; A House for Hermit Crab; Exiled; Stellaluna; Adaline Falling Star; Carrier Pigeons; Rescue Dogs; Can I Keep Him; Wackiest White House Pets; Once a Wolf; the Kissing Hand; 10 Rubber Ducks; Rescue Dogs; Turtles; Lyle, Lyle Crocodile; Soaring With the Wind; Because of Winn Dixie; Great Race of the Birds and Animals; Return of the Buffalo. 22 youth signed up for the Summer Reading Incentive Program. They have read a total of 76 books so far. Great job readers! Poetry and Book Clubs will not be held in August and September but will resume in October. Thanks to all for the generous donations to the Tribal Library. Please visit soon. The Tribal Library My name is Spencer Olson and I am the summer intern for the library. One of my SYE projects is to write an article for the Smoke Signals' August issues. When the Tribal Library started out it had only a handful of books. The selection was very limited and had virtually no videos or DVDs. Since then, the library has received donations from Tribal members and places like the K-5 department and has grown to include case after case of books for all age groups. It also has five book cases filled with videos and DVDs. You don't have to go to the library just for books or movies though. You can come to do homework or study. The library has two computers with internet access. The library also has a variety of materials for high school students who will be graduating or going off to college. Movies on how to get to college almost for free, how to cook good food on a budget and even books on how to make a good resume for that job you are applying for. The library now has a book of the week program. Every week of the Summer Youth Employment program, a book with a brief review and its own display will be featured near the Young Adults section of the Library. The reviews are another one of my projects while I am employed here. The Tribal Library has a story time on Monday mornings and the Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales activity time on Thursday afternoons as well as plenty of things in between. The library has handed out over 640 library cards. We have lots of blank library cards that we would like to issue. All you have to do is fill out a short application and have a parent's signature if you're younger than 18. The library has something for all ages, top by soon and get a library card of your very own. New Tribal Scholarship Opportunity! The CTGR Ray McKnight Scholarship was established in honor of long time Tribal member, Natural Resource Advisor, Ray McKnight, and is awarded to a student in the ForestryNatural Resources. Eligibility Requirements: 1. Must be an enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal mem ber; 2. Must be a full-time student and at least junior class standing; 3. Must maintain at least a 3.0 or equivalent CPA; 4. Must be pursuing a degree in the ForestryNatural Resources field such as: forest engineering, forest hy drology, forest recreation resources, forest management, forest science, wood & science technology, natural resources, fish & wildlife, bioresource research, crop and soil sciences, environmental sciences, forest ecosystems, resource conservation, or other ForestryNatural Resource related fields. One 2006 Ray McKnight Education Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $6,000. The scholarship is renewable for up to two academic years. The 2006 Application deadline is September 1, 2006.
