Financial Aid Family Night Part 1: Financial Aid Basics Wednesday, December 7, 2005 6-8 p.m. Willamina High School For more information, call 503-879-2275. Topics: Types of federal financial aid. What's needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Stu dent Aid (FAFSA). Parent responsibilities to complete the FAFSA. How to request an online pin to complete the FAFSA online. Other possible sources of financial aid for college. Presenters: Financial Aid representatives from Pacific University. NELA representative. Extras: Free dinner! Free drawings for various items including Pendleton blankets! This event is free and open to the public. Tribal Library News Monday - Wednesday: 8 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Thursday & Friday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (closed Friday Noon - 1 p.m.) Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Collection Additions: 116 titles were added to the collection during the month of Novem ber. Another 40 items will be added once cataloged into the library database. 16 new Native American videos were purchased from Vision Maker and are available for checkout. Video purchase was made pos sible through the Tribe's Institute of Museum & Library Services En hancement grant funding. Video titles include: Fire Warriors Navajo Code Talkers Ancient Spirit, Living Word Hand Games (Stick Games) The Great American Foot Race The Voyage Home XIT: Without Reservation American Cowboys Movie Time at the Library: The library recently purchased a TV and VCRDVD player so that we can begin showing movies at the li brary as part of library programming. Movies will be shown on Mon day evenings at 6 p.m. General Audience movies will be shown that are included in the Library's Movie Licensing authority. Titles will vary. Youth 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a parent. Young Adults ages 13 - 17 must be accompanied supervised by a responsible adult. The library is not responsible for transportation to and from the library. The Tribal Safety Ordinance regulations apply to all persons on Tribal property. Discover Oregon Classes: The Library will host a second weav ing class for beginning and intermediate weavers on December 3 in classroom 124. Tribal member, Sam Henny, will instruct participants on how to make a small basket using hemp and yarn. This class is lim ited to 15 adults. Please contact the library at ext. 1488 to register for the class. V Book Club: Next meeting is December 10 at noon - 1 p.m. and on December 27 at 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The theme for Book Club reading this time is on Young Adult novels. Book Club members are providing sum mary reviews of the novels they read. The summaries are posted near the book to encourage increased check out of collection items by youth. "I Remember When..." sessions will begin in January 2006. This program is in developmental stages and will be for Elders who want to gather together to share stories about what they remember recall about selected topics. Bi-Folkal Kits will be shared that may include videos, booklets, songs, etc. that may help guide participants in recalling his tory and events in their lives. Topics and themes may include: Auto mobiles, Fashion, School Days and Music. Please contact the library if you are an Elder and are interested in participating in the "I Remem ber When..." sessions. Youth Leadership Meeting " "" ... - Li y (1 ll Future Leaders Students from Chemawa Indian School participate in a team-building challenge during a Native Youth Leadership meeting put on by the Youth Education Department on Friday, November 4. The purpose of these meet ings is to teach leadership and teamwork skills for upcoming Tribal leaders. Students Of The Month Spotlight Osprey Gibbons Grade: 2nd Teacher: Mrs. Ronco School: Willamina Elementary School Osprey continues to work hard in the classroom, excels in reading, and is help ful to his classmates. He is respectful of adults, accountable for his work and al ways tries his best. When asked about his dreamsambitions he said that he would like to be a cop or a teacher. His favorite sub jects in school are reading and math. The person he respects and admires most is his dad, Marcus, because "he takes me shopping and he takes field trips with our class." Osprey is very family oriented and is always willing to be the "big brother" to his siblings. He also is involved in sweat lodge, pow wow's, loves to dance and pray and is very proud of his heritage. Osprey is the son of Marcus Gibbons, and the grandson of Evelyn Quenelle and Jack "Bumps" Gibbons. Ishnura Nelson Grade: 2nd Teacher: Mrs. Dawson School: Faulconer-Chapman School Ishnura is kind, hard working, and al ways eager to learn. He is excelling in math and independent thinking. He is also ad mired for his cultural knowledge and the way he practices it daily. Ishnura has im proved in speech classes, reading aloud, and regularly achieves 100 on spelling tests. When asked about his dreamsambitions he said that he would like to go to college (maybe in Washington) and learn to be a toy maker. He would also like to visit the island of Kauai, HI and the Galapagos Islands too. His favorite subject in school is, "P.E., because it's a cool thing and also spelling because we get candy if we get 100 on our spelling tests." The person he respects and admires most is his mom, Elaine, because she is a great parent and his sister PinNaniHiish because she plays games with me everyday. Ishnura is also involved in soccer, baseball, cubscouts, sweat lodge and other ceremonies. He is the son of Elaine LaBonte, the grandson of Lester LaBonte and Nancy Ridlon, and the great-grandson of Esther and Jack LaBonte. ( f
