Richard Allen Schmid May 17, 1941 November 16, 2005 Tribal Elder Richard Schmid, 64, passed away at his home Wednesday, November 16, 2005. He was born on May 17, 1941 in Tillamook the son of Emil and Zelda McKnight Schmid. At the age of 2, Richard's father died, and he was raised by Sie Lane and Zelda. Richard lived in Tillamook and Bay City before en listing in the Army. He was present during the haircut of Elvis Presley. Following his military service he returned to Tillamook and worked at several lumber mills and logging sites. He worked the pond saw and pulled green chain, ran loader and skidder. Richard married Julie Ann Mewhinney on February 22, 1972 in Longview, Washington. He moved to Aumsville and from 1982 to 1990 lived in Pearland, Texas and then moved to Keizer until 1992. He moved to Grand Ronde before moving to Dallas for four years. He has lived in Grand Ronde again for the past four months. He worked for the mill in Grand Ronde and retired from Spirit Mountain Casino after working there for 2 years. He was a member of the Grand Ronde Tribe and Truth Tabernacle in Keizer. Richard enjoyed hunting, camping and gambling. He is a loved husband, father and pe-pa. He is survived by his wife Julie of Grand Ronde, son, Rick Schmid, daughter Tammy, daughter Zelda Louann Schmid of Salem, son, William "Bill" Halonen of Houston, Texas, daughter Ronda Marie Halonen of Salem and daughter Patsy Delain Buckley of Reno, Nevada along with two grandsons and one granddaughter. Also surviving is a sister Betty Lou Felix of Puyallup, Washington, brothers Kenneth Gene Schmid of Ontario, Oregon and Robert Schmid of Grand Ronde. Memorial service were held on Monday, November 28 at the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery.
