"GreatTribal Leaders of Modern Times" Class Offered At Grand Ronde The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Portland State Univer sity are partnering this fall to offer "Great Tribal Leaders of Modern Times." The class will meet Thursday from 6 to 8:50 p.m. in the Education Divi sion Building, room 126-A. The first class meeting is Thursday Septem ber 29, and the class meets weekly through December 8. The class can be taken as a non-credit course, taken for upper-division undergraduate (300-level) or for graduate-level (500-level) credit. Tuition is $350 for non-credit registration, $800 for undergraduate credit and $1,350 for graduate credit. The textbook is included in the registration cost. This series presents videotaped interviews with modern Tribal leaders, and spans the fields of political science, American history, Native Ameri can studies, U.S. government, multi-cultural studies and sociology. Nearly 30 modern Tribal leaders have been interviewed to date, including CTGR's own Kathryn Harrison. Instructing the course is Elizabeth Furse, former U.S. congressional representative. The exhibit includes brief author biog raphies with a display of books by the author. 45 Native Authors are represented in the exhibit. Collection Additions A significant number of books (78) were purchased this month thanks to funding awarded to the Tribal Library in an Institute of Museum & Library Services Enhancement Grant. New titles include: Warm Springs Tribal member authors George Aguilar's When the River Ran Wild, and Elizabeth Woody's Hand Into Stone book of poetry; Several novels by Native author Louise Erdrich: including Birchbark House, Four Souls and The Bingo Palace; Five Shakespeare plays; A series of six James Bond 007 books; Best Tales of the Yukon and The Spell of the Yukon by Robert Service. For youth and young adults new editions include: Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings and Blueberries for Sal; Ed Young's Lon PoPo; Bill Martin Eric Carle's Polar Bear, Polar Bear and Chicka Chicka ABC; Native Author Joseph Bruchac's A Boy Called Slow, Children of the Longhouse, Keepers of Life; Arnold Griese's The Wind is Not a River; Louisa Alcott's Little Women; Mordicai Gerstein's The Man Who Walked Between the Two Towers; The Great Wheel, history of the Ferris Wheel by Robert Lawson, Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold. The Tribal Library staff welcomes book recommendations from li brary patrons. We will be purchasing collection items periodically so please let us know what books you would like to have at the Tribal Library. Discover Oregon Workshop The second session of Discover Oregon workshops will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2005 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registra tion is required. Contact Marion Mercier at ext. 1488 at the Tribal Library to register. Library Volunteer Recruitment The library is conducting recruitment for 3 volunteers to perform duties in the Tribal Library. The Library Volunteer Program is just being established. Volunteers will work 2 to 4 hours per month performing duties in three specific areas of interest expertise that will include: 1. Circulation, catalog ing, re-shelving the library collection items; 2. Provide guid ance & instruction to computer users in software and internet programs; and 3. Preparing literature summaries about col lection items; and working on special projects.
