2 JULY 1, 2005 Smoke Signals Attention Tribal Members: NOTE THAT ALL GENERAL COUNCIL MEETINGS START AT 1 1 AJVL 2005 GENERAL COUNCIL MEETING SCHEDULE SUMMER BREAK September 11 Grand Ronde (Second Sunday Labor Day) October 9 Grand Ronde (Second Sunday Hunting) November 6 Grand Ronde December 4 Grand Ronde Dear Smoke Signals, It's been awhile since I wrote a letter to the Smoke Signals. This will be my last. I have announced my retirement to Sheriff Wolfe and to Tribal Council. I will be leaving later this month. I have been working in the Grand Ronde community since 1991, officially assigned since 1994. To many friends, both in and out of the Tribal community, it has been my pleasure to serve you. I will take with me many pleasant memories of the community. Sgt. Nathan Goldberg will be leading several new deputies from the Grand Ronde substation. I know they will be received by the community as the community will be served by all of them. Respectfully, Tom O'Brien Deputy Sheriff Editor's Note: We wish you well and thank you for your service to our community. Take care. Dear Tribal members, The time is long over due for me to pay my respects and express my heart felt gratitude to each and every Tribal member that contributed in making Tribal restoration possible. I can only hope that a small few are as grateful and appre ciative. I see so much work being done by so many for the sake of the entire commu nity, both Native and non-Native. This is the nature of our people. I'm most proud however of the work I see being done to teach and preserve our culture. Without personal knowledge of our history, language, culture and spiritual ways, we will cease to exist. So for me as should be for everyone, there is nothing more important than doing all I can do to learn and pass the old ways before they are lost. It is for those reasons that I hope to establish an open line of communication with the Tribe and Tribal members that have the ability and knowledge to as sist me in learning our culture. I have been an active member in a Traditional Spiritual Circle for the past several years which has lead to a life changing experience which most likely would never come about without Tribal restoration. All that is missing now is the ability for me to say my prayers and sing my songs in my language during Inipi Cer emonies. Anyone who has the knowledge I seek and is willing to work with me, please write to me. Most respectfully, "Butch" Walter F. Simmons Roll 2317 Walter F.
