Dear Smoke Signals, As an outsider (I live about twenty minutes from the Spokane Indian Reservation), I read your interview and lead story about Sherman Alexie with great interest. I first heard him read at a poetry reading in Spokane some eight or nine years ago. His energy and story-telling style is indeed captivating and entertaining. His books are unique. I have bought and read only four, but he is one of those authors that one would love to meet and chat with along the lines that Ron Karten developed. Thank you for giving a very creative (if controversial) and talented young man a deserved piece of recognition. Surely the articles will encourage others to expose their creative side and experiment. Keep up the good work with Smoke Signals. It is a pleasure to read. I learn. Ralph Allen Nine Mile Falls, WA Dear Smoke Signals, At times like these, we find out just how much we appreciate family and friends. The family of Steven McKnight would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for all the love and help we received. The meal and care we got at the dinner was exceptional, we couldn't have asked for better. Thank you all. Val, a special thank you, you are irreplaceable. The drummers at the graveside was greatly appreciated, you were there for us in a moment's notice at our loss. Thank you. We would also like to thank the Tribal Council members for their sharing and caring. Our heart felt thank you to all who expressed their love and care at our loss. Sincerely, The McKnight Family Dear members of the community, We would like to say thank you to someone that took the time to help local kids. Don Risseeuw, as many of you know, is one busy man. On Memorial Day weekend, he used his excavation equipment to clear a spot for a com munity and city built playground. Don's time and labor will make it pos sible for kids to enjoy Lamson Park playground this summer. Members of the community that volunteer their time and services help to build a stron ger community. We are all lucky to live in the West Valley. Everyone has been so terrific over the last year with the projects that we have done. Thanks again Don Risseeuw and everyone else that attended the fundraisers to build this playground. Our group is proud to be part of this community. We hope to see everyone at Lamson Park on July 3 for a BBQ and concert featuring the Jake Blair Band. Come join us to kick off the holiday. Thank you, The C.R.E.W. (Citizens Restoring Everyone's Willamina) All Tribal offices will be closing on Friday, July 1 at 12 p.m. and closed on Monday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The Eugene Satellite Office will be closed from Monday, June 27 to Monday, July 4. ill BRENT MERRILL PUBLIC INFORMATION MANAGEREDITOR 503-879-2321 brent mefTlIIgrandronde.Ofj JUSTIN PHILLIPS GRAPHIC DESIGNER 503-879-2190 Kisdn.philllpserandronde.org BESPOKE PATE ISSUE PATE Fri., June 17 JULY1 Tues., July 5 JULY 15 Wed., July 20 AtJG.l Fri.,Aug.5 AUG. 15 Fri., Aug. 19 SEPT. 1 Mod., Sept. 5 SEPT.
