Smoke Signals 11 MAY 1, 2005 Grand Ronde HeadStart Recruitment runs from April-July. This announcement is for children who are three years old by September 1, 2005 to children who are five years old (pre-kindergarten) and income eligible. Our first day of school is September 6, 2005. Selection and notification will be made by mid-August and you will be notified if your child has been accepted or declined. Children with special needs are strongly encouraged to apply. K-5 Summer Program Information The Tribal Education Division K-5 Program will be accepting Summer Program applications from May 16-26, 2005. To be eli gible for the summer program the parents must be working, training andor be in school. Priority will be given to the fami lies currently participating in our K-5 Aftercare Program. Ap plications will be dated as they are received. Application forms can be picked up and returned to K-5 Build ing (by the Willamina Middle School at Grand Ronde), The Early Childhood Director or Administrative Assistant (located in the ECE building) by May 26, 2005 along with June tuition of $50. Learning to read is hard work for children. Fortu nately, research is now available that suggests how to give each child a good start in reading. Tribal members may register with short-term training for cost. If you are after the first 10 that sign up, you may still come to class, but you will need to provide your own material. Please R.S.V.P. 503-S79-2143. 2005 Achievement & Recognition Awards This year's Achievement & Recognition Award applications were mailed out the last week of March to all enrolled CTGR Tribal youth in grades Kindergarten through 12th (ages 5-18 yrs.). Completed applications must be postmarked or returned to CTGR Youth Educa tion by Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Applications received late will NOT be accepted. If you have not received your Achievement & Recognition Award application, please contact Matt Bucknell in Youth Education at 503-879-2101. American Indian Services Scholarship Qualified students are eligible for up to one half of tuition, with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $1,500. Applicants must be enrolled full or part time as an undergraduate at a college, univer sity, or technical school; have less than 150 semester or 210 quarter credit hours; a minimum 2.25 GPA, and be at least 14 Native Ameri can. Native Vision Scholarship Scholarships of $1,000 are available to outstanding American Indian young people with a commitment to education, athletics and leadership. Applicants must be enrolled Native American; be a high school senior; demonstrate com munity involvement; maintain at least a 3.0 GPA; demonstrate involvement in extracurricular andor athletic activities; and be admitted to an accredited col lege or university in Fall 2005.
