10 FEBRUARY 1, 2005 Smoke Signals ARTISTS WITHOUT BARRIERS Who, What: A Non-Profit Organization has been set up to teach children art. We charge $15 a month for art lessons, all supplies included. We take children ages 5 to 16 years old. Lessons include, drawing, pencil, pen, ink, watercolor, acrylic, goush (a water base) and some calligraphy. Where: Grand Ronde Church and Willamina Church When: Mondays at Grand Ronde 1-3 p.m. Mondays at Willamina 4-6 p.m. Teacher is Richard Fenwick. Our goal is to reach as many children as possible. If you are interested please call Elverta Hayden Administra tor at 503-390-4615. -t&T Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Housing Board of Commissioners Seeking Members One position open to Tribal applicants only and two positions open to Tribal and Non-Tribal applicants The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Board has three Board of Commissioners seats coming open in March 2005. Anyone who is interested in serving in one of these positions and who has housing related experience to qualify for the position, is en couraged to attend the February 15, 2005, Board meeting. The meet ing will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Housing Authority office at 28450 Tyee Road (just off Grand Ronde Road) in Grand Ronde. Please call to confirm the date and time. This is an opportunity to: 1) observe how the board functions, 2) become acquainted with the types of issues that are regularly dis cussed and 3) determine if you are seriously interested in such a po sition now or in the future. The open positions will each have a three year term that expires in March 2008. Interested persons should have a demonstrated inter est in housing and experience in the housing field in some capacity, such as: affordable housing development, property management, resi dential building construction, housing finance, housing planning and other housing related areas. The Board oversees all housing development, housing management, housing programs and housing operations for the Tribe, and is re sponsible for the policy decisions for the Housing Authority. The Board currently meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Housing Authority office in Grand Ronde. Interested persons should send a letter outlining their interest and qualifications to: Carina Kistler Ginter, Executive Director, Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority, 28450 Tyee Road, Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347. All letters need to be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, Febru ary 28, 2005 to be considered. The Housing Commissioner will be selected and appointed by the Tribal Council. The intent is to provide financial awards to youth for education and training programs at schools, colleges, job training organizations, or other worthwhile organiza tions. Traditionally individual awards have not exceeded $1,000. Applications are available by contacting the Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority at 503-879-2401 or 1-800-422-0232 ext. 2401. Bob McKnight June 19, 1932 January 8, 2005 Tribal Elder Robert "Bob" McKnight of Oakland Calif, passed away on January 8, 2005 in Oakland. He was 72. He was born to Thomas and Elvira Langley McKnight in Brooks. As a young child the family moved to the Grand Ronde and Willamina areas. After attending school there he moved to Nevada where he worked at various jobs before moving to California in the early 1960's. On May 9, 1959 he married Marie Arenas in Spark, Nev. The couple made their home in Oakland where he worked as a mechanic for the Mass Transit Bus System. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marie of Oakland; sons, T.J. of Nevada and Robert Wayne of California; daughter, Tina of Cali fornia; brothers, Wayne and Richard; sisters, Dorothy Lane, Maxine Leno, Beverly Kooney, Barbara Feehan and Judy Olsen, all of Or egon; and six grandchildren. The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Or- egon is beginning its own Tribal Member Review Board to periodi- I cally review the cases of Tribal children who are in Tribal custody i j and have often been placed out of their homes. i B In the review meetings, the Board will review files and reports, and will be able to ask questions of the Indian Child Welfare Pro- gram caseworkers in charge of the case. Often, Board members also listen to the parents, the children (if old enough), the foster parents, lawyers and others concerned with the case. The Review Board members will then decide whether or not the . planning for the children is in their best interests, and will make . . recommendations to the program, the parents, caretakers and to the I Judge.
