It will be conducted by the Tribe's Cultural Education program. The ten-week course begins September 27 and ends Decem ber 6. It will be held Monday nights from 5:30 p.m; - 8:30 p.m. in room 126a in the Tribes' Adult Education building. "Wa-un-spe" Youth Conference (Lakota to teach) "Helping improve the quality of life for our Native People of today" September 18, 2004 1 p.m. till 8 p.m. PCC Sylvanja1 Campus, 12000 SE 49th Avenue, Portland, Oregon We would like to invite you to a "Wa-un-spe" (to teach) youth confer ence on September the 18th at PCC Sylvania Campus. The speakers that will be presenting at this event are Nathan Chasing Horse from "Dances with Wolves" and the PBS movie "Dream Keepers" and Brian Frejo Turner Network Television's "Geronimo"and "Last of the Mohicans". Pre-regis-tration is required for all that will be attending. This event is recommended for grades 6 and up. Chaperones are required for groups of 4 or more. Dinner will be provided. Throughout the day there will be several draw ing for school supplies. We will be signing students up for after school programming and discuss programs that will be offered during the school year. Your suggestions about programming are important! By providing us your contact information we can keep you updated on local and out of state opportunities, and remind you of upcoming deadlines for education and scholarship funding. Please call the Education Depart ment at 503-879-2275. If you haven't taken the SAT's for college, you need to do so! Save your receipt and the Education Division can reimburse you the cost for this test. The SAT's are adding a new writing portion to this test in March 2005, so plan on taking it in the fall if you want to avoid an extra section. To sign up go to this website www.collegeboard.com. If you don't have computer access, please come to the Education Building and use one of our computers. You will need credit card information to sign up online. I also have practice tests available for your use to help prepare you for the SAT's. Fall Testing Dates are Oct 9th and November 6th. Need to sign up by October 1 and 29 for these. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Grand Ronde Education Library The Tribal Library would like to start a program called "Saturday Fun in the Library" beginning this fall. This would occur the fourth Saturday of each month and include planned activities like movie matinees, crafts, speakers, storytellers and a variety of other fun education-oriented activities. Part of the program would include snacks from the Library's "Healthy Snacks for Kids" cookbook. If you or your kids are interested in this program, please contact the Library at 503-879-1488. For the Proposed Running Bear Rock Quarry The Tribal Environmental Review (ER) and a Finding Of No Sig nificant Impact (FONSI) have been issued for the proposed Running Bear Rock Quarry on the Grand Ronde Reservation in portions of the NW V4 NW V Section 7, T5S, R8W, Willamette Meridian. The ER discloses the issues relating to the environmental resources af fected by the Proposed Action and alternatives to the Proposed Ac tion. The ER further discloses the analysis of the likely environmen tal consequences of the Proposed Action and alternatives to the Pro posed Action. The FONSI discloses the alternative selected by the responsible official and gives supporting reasons for this selection. The Preferred Alternative, Alternative A, proposes to clear 22 acres of eight-year-old Douglas-fir reproduction in order to commercially excavate, extract, and process the underlying basalt rock for use in Tribal projects and for sale to the local community. The ER and FONSI are available for public review and comment until 5 p.m. on September 15, 2004. JOIN THE GRAND RONDE CIRCLE OF WEAVING October 29, 30, and 31, 2004 marks the first ever Circle of Weaving, hosted by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Teachers will be conducting classes in traditional cedar, juncus, roots and shoots and hemp and yarn. The registration fee covers meals and all workshop supplies. R.S.V.P. is required as this workshop is limited to 100 participants. It is open to Grand Ronde Tribal members, their immediate families and other native people only. Please note: There is no fee for enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal members.
