NEW: Now Young Warriors For Boys All interested girls and boys must be able to meet the following guide lines in order to be eligible for the Veterans' Royalty Court: All must be enrolled members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. Participants should have never been married and have no children. All must be enrolled in and currently attending a public or private school. All must be drug and alcohol free. Must have one year of pow-wow experience. Must have their own regalia, or be able to make their own regalia before the application deadline. Participants must be willing and able to attend all Veterans' events and be prepared to represent the Veter ans and the Tribe. Must have a parent or sponsor willing to participate and attend ac tivities with the girls and boys and provide transportation. Royalty Court participants and their parent or sponsor must attend all required events (pow-wows, parades, fund-raisers, organizational meetings and others). Absences can be prearranged with the Royalty Committee Advisor. Three unexcused absences will result in disqualifi cation from Royalty Court. Please note that all participants receive 1 point for every event for the contest. Royalty Court participants are expected to stay for the duration of the events. This includes helping setup for events such as meetings and parades, as well as dancing during Grand Entry, InterTribals and staying until the flags are retired unless pre-approved with the Royalty Advisor, Participants are expected to speak in front of large groups of people. Royalty Court participants must be willing and able to dance. Remember: You are all part of a team and are expected to treat yourselves, running mates and others with respect at all times. As of July 9, 2004 you must be 1 0 to 1 4 years of age for Junior Veterans' Royalty Queen Junior Veterans' Young Warriors; and 15 to 18 years of age for Senior Veterans' Royalty QueenSenior Veterans' Young Warriors. All submitted posters must illustrate a "fire safety" or "home safety" theme. Children in K-8 are eligible to participate. All entries must be origi nal and created by crayons, markers or paint. Posters must be on 8.5" by 11" paper. This year's winner can select one of two prizes $1,000 or a trip to AMERIND's 18th Annual Meeting and Expo in Nashville, Tennes see in October 2004. Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Housing Board of Commissioners Seeking Members Two positions open to Tribal and Non-Tribal applicants. The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Board has two Board of Commissioners seats open. Anyone who is interested in serving in this position and who has housing related experience to qualify for the position, is encouraged to attend the April 20, 2004 Board meeting. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Housing Authority office at 28450 Tyee Road (just off Grand Ronde Road) in Grand Ronde. Please call to confirm the date and time. This is an opportunity to: 1) observe how the board functions, 2) become acquainted with the types of issues that are regularly dis cussed and 3) determine if you are seriously interested in such a posi tion now or in the future. The open positions each have a three-year term. Interested persons should have a demonstrated interest in housing and experience in the housing field in some capacity, such as: affordable housing development. property management. residential building construction. housing finance. housing planning. other housing related areas. The Board oversees all housing development, housing management and housing operations for the Tribe and is responsible for policy de cisions. The Board currently meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Housing Authority office in Grand Ronde. NWIHA Scholarship For Tribal Youth The Northwest Indian Housing Association annually provides schol arships to Tribal youth, defined as individuals ages 24 years old or younger. The intent is to provide financial awards to youth for educa tion and training programs at schools, colleges, job training organiza tions, sports camps or other worthwhile organizations. Traditionally, individual awards have not exceeded $1,000. Applications are avail able by contacting the Housing Authority at 503-879-2401.
