Smoke Signals 11 MARCH 15, 2004 Bachelor's Degree With Tribal Management Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute and New Mexico State Uni versity create a bachelor's degree in general business with a Tribal man agement option. Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute currently offers an associate's degree in business administration with an emphasis on Tribal manage ment. Beginning January 2004, SIPI students will be able to earn half the credits they need for a New Mexico State University bachelor's degree in business administration at SIPI. That would mean SIPI students could transfer up to 66 credit hours in business science and other fields, includ ing 12 hours in Tribal management courses. Then, it is expected that much of the work towards completing the NMSU degree also could be done at SIPI, through SIPI's distance education facilities. PORTLAND TEACHERS PROGRAM PTP is a partnership effort among Portland Public Schools (PPS), Port land Community College (PCC), Portland State University (PSU) and the University of Portland (UP). It is designed to recruit and help prepare culturally competent teachers, with a special focus on historically under represented groups in the teaching profession. As a retention and schol arship program, it assists selected students in completing teacher educa tion through the regular course work at PCC and PSU or UP. Third Wave Foundation Scholarship Program Announcement Third Wave Foundation Scholarship Program is available to all full-time or part-time students age 30 and under who are enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an accredited university, college, vocationaltechnical school or community college. The primary criteria to qualify for a Third Wave scholarship is a vigorous engagement in activist work and financial need. The Scholarship Committee prioritizes applicants who have limited access to financial resources and whose civic, community or cultural work shows a commitment to social justice. Within our scholarship grant making, the Woodlake Fund provides scholarships for young women of color who prioritize social justice and the work done in the spirit of justice and equality over academic performance and who integrate social jus tice into all areas of their lives. Students applying for grants should also be involved as activists, artists or cultural workers working on issues such as racism, homophobia, sexism or other forms of inequality. The amount of each scholarship is decided after careful review of the student's financial aid report. The number of scholarships awarded depends on the amount of each award. Deadline is April 1, 2004. Scholarships range in amount from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Native American Youth Initiative Conference The Association of American Indian Physicians is having a National Native American Youth Initiative Conference to motivate Native Ameri can students to remain in the academic pipeline and to pursue a career in health professions or biomedical research. Eligibility: Native American high school students planning to enter health professions between the ages of 16 through 18 years old are eligible to apply. Students must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. If students are chosen to attend, all expenses are paid to go to Washing ton D.C. on June 19-27, 2004. Most colleges require this for admissions. Good news! Funding is now available for Tribal members taking the SAT. Please save a receipt to be reimbursed for this. This is effective 1-27-04. You can register for the SAT online at www.collegeboard.com. You will need credit card information to do this. We will also have paper versions of this available if you need one. You will be able to pay with a check using the paper version. We have very limited paper copies, so please access the website if you can. Computers are available at the Educa tion Building as well. You'll be part of a three-person editing staff with a lot of responsibility and independence.
