2 AUGUST 15, 2003 Smoke Signals To the Editor: It is time once again, to write my note of thanks. My, my, how time does fly the older you get, the faster it goes. I thank God for allowing me to reach my 87th birthday. To my three sons and my three daughters and my other boy, Ray, thanks guys for giving me such a fun party. It was great seeing relatives and friends, old and new. Thank you everyone for taking time out of your busy weekend to help me celebrate. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. I did! Verna (Little ole lady) Larsen Roll 419 Dear Smoke Signals, When I heard about the drum class, I had no idea of what to expect. But I wanted to learn and be a stronger Tribal member, so I felt being a part of this class would help. Indeed, this experience was a plus. Just seeing and hearing our Portland Tribal members who attended made me feel proud. We scurried about; I had never before felt so excited, almost like Christmas. Here stood before me a smiling individual, half my age Bobby Mercier. He introduced himself to each person and helped move tables and set up water tubs. We worked as a team. The preparations are very necessary... 2 large tubs (I could enjoy a calgon bath in one). The cowhide was soaked until soft enough to handle. We then chose a hoop, which the hide was stretched upon. The rest was very taxing. Knowing how to make a drum and making one, I proudly can do. I know my drum looks well put together. At first, I felt slow and all thumbs, but that's normal for me. I do things slow, but always thoroughly. I was the last to complete my drum, but the first to finish my essay on the expe rience. We spelled her name wrong. It is Carina Kistler Ginter. We said that she was Housing Director for the Nooksack Tribe in Washington for five years. She was director there for 1-12 years. She was Housing Services Man ager for the Alameda County Community Development Agency for five years. We regret the errors and wish Carina well in her new post. am& rtftTrtfrflrafaqa inftocfousa iBMiaiH3 m?
