By Ron Karten The summer's second rodeo in Grand Ronde could have been better attended. "Too many rodeos going on elsewhere," said Marvin Kimsey, Rodeo Board Chairman and event organizer, "in Eugene, Corvallis and else where, and they didn't have time to get back and forth." But those who came had good reason and great fun. "What really drew me to this one is the Native American sponsorship," said Dallas rancher Michael Cartwright. "That really turns me on. I want to support Native Americans any time I can." Sanctioned by the Northwest Pro Rodeo Asso ciation with stock provided by the P9 Rodeo Com pany, the rodeo featured all of the usual events as detailed in the results box, plus the old 'Chicken-to-the-Moon' trick. It was the first rodeo for Nancy Anderson, a web-designer from Beverly Hills. She loved the riding and the color and crafts, but winced when ropes from riders on horses brought down a big bull. "I wish they wouldn't do that," she said. Don Etzel and his wife, Joyce, farmers from Turner, came with four grandchildren and one of their friends. Nine-year-old David came for "the bull riding, the bronco, the burro racing mainly everything," he said. Mary came for the Donkey Race, and all of a sudden it was on and the interview was over. "Hurry," said Joyce. "It's time for the donkey race," and five more kids headed in a dead run for the corral opening. It was a race that also drew the likes of Tribal Elder Buddy White and his wife, Anna, along with Kimsey and his wife, Michaelle, who is Rodeo Committee Trea surer and a long-time volunteer for the Tribes' rodeos. When Michaelle couldn't get up on the donkey, Marvin jumped on, and with unforgettable form, rode the length of rodeo grounds. "Look Ma, No Hands" Cowboy Shawn Johnson of Albany, Oregon, gets more than he bargained for at the "Wild Horse Stampede," an exiting free for all that kicked off the rodeo which attracted participants from thoughout the Northwest. "Life's A Drag" James Crogan of Willamina is dragged by one arm during the bareback competition. Scary Cody Campbell, a professional cowboy from Summerville, Oregon, attemps an eight-second ride on a bull provied by stock contractor P9 Rodeo Company of Parma, Idaho. Watchful Tribal Elders had a good view of the rodeo from the Elders' seating area.
