16 MARCH 15, 2003 Smoke Signals C M I Wilmadene Butler Tribal Elder Wilmadene "Tuffy" Butler passed away on February 22. She was 69. She was one of 22 children born to Andrew and Mary Amanda Riggs. She was the last surviving of the 22 children. She attended St. Michael's Catholic School and Grand Ronde Elementary School. She married James E. Butler on November 11, 1954. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She also served on Tribal Council. She loved life and devoted herself to everyone, especially her family. Survivors include her husband, James E. Butler; daughter Cynthia Ann; and three grandchildren. Editors Note: I'll never forget you Wilmadene. I'll never forget your kindness and your smile. I'll never forget the way you looked at me with loving eyes and the way you teased my mom about me being "your boy." I'll never forget the way you welcomed me into your home, but most of all I'll remember your laugh the way you crinkled your nose and cackled out loud. I love you and I will always remember you. Vernon Leo Justen Vernon Justen, a resident of Grand Ronde, passed away on February 18 in Grand Ronde. He was born on December 8, 1948 in Shakopee, Minnesota, the son of Herbert and Katherine Burnett Justen. Vernon lived in Chaska, Minne sota until 1953 when the family settled in Grand Ronde. Vernon graduated from Willamina High School. He attended O.T.I, and Western Oregon University. Vernon had been involved in all aspects of logging. He was self employed operating Justen Logging Co. which focused on reforestation and excavation around the state of Oregon. Vernon was a strong supporter of high school wrestling programs. Vernon had wrestled in high school and received a number of awards. Vernon attended St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Ronde. He was a member of the Oregon Logging Association and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Vernon loved spending time with his family and his dog Ethel. Vernon had a love of antique machinery and enjoyed exploring for new finds. He was preceded in death by his parents; Herbert and Katherine Justen and brother; Robert Justen. He is survived by his son; Jordan of Hillsboro; daughters; Janelle Justen of McMinnville and Kerry Justen of Willamina; stepson; Jason Greenlaw of Willamina; sisters; Marie Davis of Dallas, Rose Eisele and Vicky Aaron, both of Grand Ronde, Jeanne Buswell of Willamina and Barbara Hadley of Sheridan; brothers; Ted of Washington, Paul and Vincent, both of Grand Ronde; along with his grandchildren, Savannah Justen, Gabriella Justen and Braden Justen-Mendenhall. Services were held February 22. Editors Note: Vern Justen was not a member of the Tribe, but he was a member of our community. He was a member of our family and he left behind loved ones that we as a Tribe care about. Walk On in Peace Vern. Jerrold Easterling Jerrold "Jerry" Easterling of Sisters, a former longtime resident of Grand Ronde, passed away February 27 at the St. Charles Hospital in Bend. He was born August 18, 1925 in Kearney, Nebraska to Robert and Bernice Easterling. The family moved to Oregon in 1936. He attended schools in Creswell and joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation from high school. He served four years as a radioman in World War II. He graduated from the University of Oregon School of Journalism in 1951 and worked on year for the News Review in Roseburg. He was associ ated with the family auction business in Creswell for a number of years. He went to work as a business and agriculture reporter for the Capital Journal in Salem in 1970 and later was a feature writer and columnist for the Statesman Journal. He won Best of Gannett award for writing in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne: daughters, Leith Williver of Sisters and Susan Mason of Camas, Washington; son, Steven Topf of Newberg; a sister, Nancy Harrold of Creswell; and four grandchildren. Editors Note: Jerry Easterling was a noted journalist who lived in Grand Ronde and was an inspiration to many of us journalists who came along after him.
