2 NOVEMBER 15, 2002 Smoke Signals J i Dear readers of Smoke Signals and fellow Tribal members, I wanted to tell you "the rest of the story" behind four of the names that will be inscribed on the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Veterans' Memorial. My grandmother, Mary LaChance Spohn Allen, had twelve children and five of them were sons. The amazing fact is that three of Mary's sons served in three different wars. James Albert Spohn (1922 2001) served in the Navy in W.W.II; Edward Lloyd Allen (1931 ) served in the Army in Korea; and Richard David Joseph Allen I (1942 1998) served in the Army in Vietnam. One son, Robert Nigel Allen, Sr. (1930 ) was not able to serve in the military as he had heart problems. And one son, Kenneth Leroy SpohnFrasier (1927 ?), was adopted out when he was a baby because Mary found herself a widow with six children and no means of support for her children. Our family has not been able to find Kenneth Leroy, and that has left a void in his siblings' hearts. James and Richard are both deceased now and greatly missed by their family. Today, Mary's great-grandson, Steven Leslie Spohn, serves in the Navy and is stationed in Japan. He had been away for about a year from his family the last time I talked to them. Mary LaChance would have been very proud of all of her children, grand-children and great grand-children. It will be a fine tribute to all the Veterans to have this Veterans' Memorial built by our Tribe. So, that is the story behind four of the names that will be inscribed on the Veterans' Memorial.
