OCTOBER 15, 2002 Smoke Signals 7 Tribal Youth Education Sponsorship Program Youth Education Sponsorship (YE Sponsorship) program, formerly Sum mer Sponsorship, began in January 2002. YE Sponsorship is a program which provides maximum funding of $200 to enrolled Tribal members grades K-12, including home schooling one time per year to participate in school activities and extracurricular activi ties and programs. To request an application contact Chris Bailey at 1-800-422-0232 or 503-879-2101. Applications must be returned completed in order to be processed. Please allow two weeks for processing. Funding is available until depleted. Please note that requesting an application does not ensure funding and does not register the student for the activity program. Thinking of going back to school part-time? The CTGR Short Term Training and Continuing & Distance Education Programs may be able to help! Adult Tribal members can access the Short Term Training (STT) and Continuing & Distance Education (C&DE) Programs to help with the costs of registration, tuition, books and supplies required to return to school. Classes can be for employment-related skill development and training, cultural enrichment, and personal or professional growth. Qualified applicants in the C&DE program are eligible for up to $800 per school term ($1,600 for graduate students). Students in schools on a semester system are eligible for up to $1,600 per six months for under graduate and $3,200 for graduate school. Qualified applicants in the STT Program are eligible for up to $800 per termquarterthree months. Already, 110 Tribal members have signed up for classes this fall. Eligi bility requirements vary by program, but generally Tribal members age 18 or over can apply. Reminder to Current STT C&DE Students The STTC&DE Programs can help with the required textbook and sup plies needed as you return to school but only required materials. The cost of any "extras" you purchase at your college or school's book store (school sweatshirts, food items, etc.) are your responsibility and cannot be paid for out of Education Division funds. If you are unsure about a par ticular item, please check with the Continuing Education office prior to purchase. OLCIS In Search of Native American Graphic The Oregon Legislative Commission on Indian Services (OLCIS) is searching for a Native American graphic to use for the 2003-2005 Oregon Directory of American Indian Resources. OLCIS is hoping that an artist from one of Oregon Tribes could create a front and back cover design for the directory. They are not able to offer any monetary compensation but the directory is widely distributed and the artist will be acknowledged in the publication. For more information please contact Gladine G. Attention: Full Time Higher Education and Adult Vocational Training Students A requirement of the Adult Vocational Training Program and the Higher Education Program is that students attend school full time and that they file for Federal Financial Aid each academic year that they plan to attend school. Federal Aid is disbursed on a "first come first served" basis and a copy is due to the Tribe's Education Specialist by February 15 of each academic year. The new academic year, 2002 2003 began on July 1, 2002 and will run through June 30, 2003. Funding will not be awarded if Federal Aid filing verification is not in your file. If you have not submitted a copy of your free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) for 2002-2003, please do so now. United Tribes Technical College Offering Nutrition Program The United Tribes Technical College (North Dakota) is offering a Nutri tion and Food Service Program. The program is designed so students will be able to gain employment after two-years or advance to a four-year degree program in a university system. Preschool HeadStart Looking for Volunteers The Grand Ronde PreschoolHeadStart is looking for Volunteer Read ers to sign up to do a reading circle time when our kids visit the new library in the Adult Education Building once a week. This would take 15 to 20 minutes out of your day. Depending on how many sign up, it may also only be once or twice a month per volunteer. Please Help By Volunteering The Sanction Court process provides a opportunity for face to face con tact with first time juvenile offenders in the county and helps keep the kids out of the juvenile system. At Sanction Court, offenders receive sanc tion appropriate to their offenses. They are provided with supportive and follow up services to hold them accountable for their actions. Please help us keep this going, we need Volunteers from our community members to participate by sitting on our panel. Sanction Court is held about once a month and that depends on if we have kids that have gotten in trouble in Grand Ronde or Willamina (Polk County). If the kids know that you are one that sits on our panel and see you around,you might be able to change that kids mind about breaking the law. Upper South Yamhill Watershed Action Plan Meeting October 30 in Grand Ronde Are you interested in water resource issues and live in the Upper South Yamhill watershed? The Yamhill Basin Council is holding a meeting to help give residents and property owners a voice on these matters in their local area. Come and meet with YBC representatives to discuss natural resource issues of importance to you in the Upper South Yamhill Water shed. The meeting will be held at the Grand Ronde Community Center, 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde. The meeting will take place from 6:30 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
