10 SEPTEMBER 15, 2002 Smoke Signals Oregon CIS The link to a bright future! Do you need a new occupation? How about a resume? You can have access to both and more through the Oregon Career Information System. This system is available in the Education Division computer lab as well as on the Internet. It is exceptionally useful in the exploration, research, and planning solutions for schools, colleges, agencies and businesses. There are three main sections of the CIS system. They are as follows: Occupation and Employment Education and Training Exploration Tools Each section has ideas on what occupation you should go into, types of self-employment available, military employment options, goal setting, administrative tools, programs of study and training and a national school sort. You can write letters, devise a career plan, or just discover and ex plore! To top it off you can do a SKILLS or IDEAS assessment. The SKILLS assessment is a self-assessment tool to identify occupations that use the skills you want to use in your work. The IDEAS assessment is an optional component that is not available to all sites; it is a formal career assessment inventory that measures occupational interests. To access the CIS website go to the Education Division Computer Lab or the CIS website at http:oregoncis.uoregon.edu or you can visit the Tribe's Social Services department. Attention: Full Time Higher Education and Adult Vocational Training Students A requirement of the Adult Vocational Training Program and the Higher Education Program is that students attend school full time and that they file for Federal Financial Aid each academic year that they plan to attend school. Federal Aid is disbursed on a "first come first served" basis and a copy is due to the Tribe's Education Specialist by February 15 of each academic year. The new academic year, 2002 2003 began on July 1, 2002 and will run through June 30, 2003. Funding will not be awarded if Federal Aid filing verification is not in your file. If you have not submitted a copy of your free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) for 2002-2003, please do so now. United Tribes Technical College Offering Nutrition Program The United Tribes Technical College (North Dakota) is offering a Nutri tion and Food Service Program. The program is designed so students will be able to gain employment after two-years or advance to a four-year degree program in a university system. OLCIS is hoping that an artist from one of Oregon Tribes could create a front and back cover design for the directory. They are not able to offer any monetary compensation but the directory is widely distributed and the artist will be acknowledged in the publication. For more information please contact Gladine G. ART HARVEST STUDIO TOUR 2002 This October, Oregon's beautiful Yamhill County celebrates an impor tant cultural milestone ten successful years of hosting ART HARVEST STUDIO TOUR. All over the county a richly diverse and talented group of 26 artists open the doors to their private studios. This annual interactive event allows the public a rare glimpse into the artists' intimate and unique work spaces. The cost is $5 per person, payable at the first studio visited. The Howard Vollum Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation The Howard Vollum Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation is seek ing proposals for projects that provide support and encouragement for minority students who intend to pursue careers in the fields of engineer ing, mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences. Award amounts will be from $1,000 to $7,500 and will provide funding for one year; multiple-year projects must reapply annually for consider ation. Fax: 503-274-7771. Tribal Youth Education Sponsorship Program Youth Education Sponsorship (YE Sponsorship) program, formerly Sum mer Sponsorship, began in January 2002. YE Sponsorship is a program which provides maximum funding of $200 to enrolled Tribal members grades K-12, including home schooling one time per year to participate in school activities and extracurricular activi ties and programs.
