SEPTEMBER 15, 2002 Smoke Signals 3 I To the Editor, First of all, I'd like to congratulate the Smoke Signals team for their success at the Native American Journalism Association Awards in San Diego. Although I'm living away from home, I still avidly read our Tribal paper and use it as my link to Grand Ronde. I've heard many compli ments about its originality and general excellence. Well done. Unfortunately, your coverage of the NAJA awards last month was in complete. Chris Mercier, who happens to be my brother, won three awards while writing for Smoke Signals. 2nd Place for Best Feature: Weekly, as well as 2nd and 3rd Place for Best News Writing: Weekly were the awards, for which he deserves recognition. It'd be a shame that news of a Tribal member and employee, as dedicated as Chris, would go unnoticed. ..his writing didn't. I really believe that Smoke Signals is a great Tribal paper. I enjoy letting friends read about our Tribal history and community. They often comment on the quality photography and excellent writing. People from all over.... New York, Germany, Spain, etc. It's a compliment for the en tire Smoke Signals team to be recognized in San Diego. Great job. Sincerely, Bryan K. Mercier Roll 1357 EDITOR'S NOTE: Bryan, it's great to hear from you. I hope you understand that when Chris decided to throw his hat into the political arena he also chose to accept the conditions that go along with his decision. Because of our current editorial policy prohibiting Tribal Council candidates from being mentioned in the paper from the time of their nomi nations until the conclusion of the elections, Chris' accomplishments could not be reported on. We were faced with the choice of waiting to mention Chris' accom plishments until after the election (in which case the story would have been nearly three months old) or trying to cover the story while it was still timely. We chose to run the story. We're proud of Chris' accomplishments and the fact that he has won five Native American Journalists Association Awards in the last two years shows his talent. Thanks for the opportunity to explain the situation. HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY TIM HOLMES September 15th You can cross this one off your list of "Things to do before turning 40." Dated this 22fld day of August 2002. NOTICE A Petition to Contest the Election of Candidate Val Sheker Robertson was filed with the Tribal Court on September 12, 2002. For more information, please contact the Court at 503-879-2303. Can you help find the Branch of Service for these Tribal and Non-Tribal Members? Do you recognize any of these names? The Veteran's memorial Ad-Hoc Committee is searching for verification of which branch of service each of these individuals served in so we can place their names on the appropriate granite monolith (Army, Air Force, Marine Corps or Navy). The project is beginning to take shape and we are coming up fast on our deadline for the first list of Veteran's names to be sent to the monument company to be sandblasted into the black granite. There is NO CHARGE for having a name placed on the Memorial, only verified miliary service. Please make the appropriate notations and return to our office at the Old Depot. We are there every Wednesday or you can drop it in the mail to Veteran's Memorial; P.O. Box 53; Grand Ronde, OR 97347.
