Police Training in Grand Ronde
"Hands Up" Special Response Team (S.R.T.) members from Polk County,
Dallas, Independence and Monmouth Police Departments took part in some con
frontational simulation training recently in Grand Ronde. An unoccupied house
behind the Fort Hill Texaco served as the training grounds and was donated to
the Sheriff's office by the landowner prior to the house's demolition. S.R.T. team
members practiced entering the house and securing officers playing the role of
criminals hiding in the residence.
"This type of realistic training is important because it allows us to try new tactics
and hone our skills under stressful situations," said Grand Ronde Polk County Sheriff's
Sergeant Jeff Van Laanen. ' -

Spend this Memorial Day
at the Grand Ronde Cemetery
When you make plans to visit
the Grand Ronde Cemetery
for Memorial Day, please arrange to
spend a little extra time this year.
The cemetery staff has planned a
special memorial event in honoring
the graves of not only those who
gave their lives in battle, but of
friends and relatives.
?stv-"rl-rt
lam"01 , Miftot , '
Cemetery staff and volunteers will
be available May 21 through May
28 to document stories you remem
ber about friends and relatives bur
ied in the cemetery and any stories
regarding the cemetery itself. For
example, did you know that mayka
lapush chaku-4ay?wa pus mayka
makmak qha mimalust tilixam
milayt (your mouth will become
crooked if you eat in the cemetery)?
In preparation for this event, cem
etery staff have been busy updat
ing burial records, mapping the cem
etery, and making a list of those old
markers which are in need of resto
ration. If you can help identify some
of the unmarked graves or have a
family member whose stone may
need repair, this is a good time to
share this information. If you have
any questions, please contact Russ
Leno at 503-879-5525.
