By Justin Phillips There comes a time when an oppo nent just better bow-down and take a seat. Outwrestling her opponents is just another day for Tribal youth Sum mer Mercier. After compiling a record of 219 wins and only 18 losses against the guys, there comes a time for bragging rights. And Summer has earned that. Mercier has been wrestling for five years now. She has accomplished a lot over that period. Her living room is filled with medals and trophies she has received. She has had to wrestle all her matches in the boy's division. There is no girl wrestling events in Oregon, except the Girl's Classic, which is held in Portland once a year. Her record with girls is 20 wins and four losses. She has never lost a match in the girl's division in her own weight bracket. Mercier has won the State Cham pionship in all three styles (Freestyle, Folk style, and Greco-Roman) throughout the last five years. She won the State Championship in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman last year in La Grande, Oregon. In the 1998 Northwest Regional Championships, which is composed of all the state champions from 13 west ern states, she placed sixth in Greco- Roman. Last year she was invited to join the Oregon Women's Team that competed in the Women's National Champion ship, which included wrestlers from all 50 states. Due to no one being in her weight class, she agreed to wrestle 24 pounds above her weight, which was five brackets above hers. She placed fourth, which made her an Ail-American in the woman's division. Mercier and her stepfather, Pat Henry, will be traveling to Michigan again this year to compete in the Girl's National Championships. The fam ily is hoping she will get to wrestle in her own weight bracket. She has also competed in the boy's and girl's Classics. She won the Girl's Classic four years in a row. Mercier finished in third place this year, but she had to wrestle up three weight divisions. Mercier wrestles in the 80 lbs. boy class. Her brothers are Anthony Henry, Joe Mercier, Jerimiah Mercier. Sisters are Candi Koehler, Theresa Henry and Erica Mercier. Her goal is to wrestle in the Olym pics in 2008. Mercier plans on wres tling boys in high school in the future. She is wrestling on the Dayton Junior High School boy's team this year and did last year as well. She is undefeated - pAYTON X -v f 1 r-r - I jv Summer Mercier in her own weight division.
