14 Smoke Signals Elder Honor Day 2000 brings visitors from across the northwest Lunch, dinner and gifts for all at 2nd annual event. By Brent Merrill Tribal Elders from across the north west visited the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde on Friday, July 14. Elders from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reser vation, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho, the Yakama Nation and the Kalispell Tribe of Washington all vis ited Grand Ronde for the honor day. "We thought it would be a good way to honor our Elders. More and more of the Tribes are doing it," said Grand Ronde Tribal Elder and Elder's Com mittee Chair Sharon Hanson. "I met a lot of friendly people and it makes us Elders come closer together. It al lows us to get more involved with other Tribes." She said she felt especially honored to be there. Mabel Gaston and Arvella Hudson Nora Kimseyand Ila Dowd for lunch, many of which stayed for dinner. The Grand Ronde Veterans Color Guard kicked off the event by pre senting the flags and Tribal Chair Kathryn Harrison gave a welcoming speech. The Grand Ronde Royalty performed the Lord's Prayer in sign language while Becky Gilliam sang in the background. One of Grand Ronde's oldest living treasures and one of the Tribe's most respected Elders, Ila Dowd, 91, gave the invocation in Chinook Jargon. After lunch, gifts were given to the oldest man and woman visiting. Later, the Elders played bingo, had dinner and spent the evening social izing with old and new friends. The event concluded the next morn ing with a breakfast and a fond fare well. Grand Ronde Elder Dorothy Lawe said she was pleased to see so many living treasures all together at one time in one place. She said she felt especially honored to be there. "It's just wonderful. It's just great," said Lawe. "I like helping with ev erything we do. I just eat that up. I like talking about it and planning it. You just feel like the queen bee. "I'm so proud of this beautiful place that we have for this now," said Lawe of the Tribe's Community Cen ter. "This is just really special." Due to the number of tags this year versus the number of applica tions, doe tags had to be drawn this year. Tags not drawn will be put on an alternate list. ' , . i ir.Tj.i.! rrsr-.v: it,:!.', A limited edition poster from the Crazy Horse Memorial Museum in South Dakota was recently signed and dedicated to the Confeder ated Tribes of Grand Ronde when Tribal member Marcia Bolton and her family visited the one-of-a-kind monument The poster was signed by Donovin Sprague of the Native American Educational and Cultural Center in Crazy Horse, South Da kota.
