In seeking your support for election to Council, I would like you to know that my focus would be on health and wellness programs for the Elders, health and education for our children, housing, and ac countability for Council members and Tribal staff. It is so very important for the Tribe to continue diversification, so that future generations will have something to cover existing programs. Should ca sino revenue ever fail to cover those needs, I would urge the voting membership to carefully consider the candidates for Tribal Council. Choose those whom you feel capable of handling all aspects of Tribal business on a fair and impartial basis. Re member, these are the people you choose to control all Tribal programs and operations. They in fact have a great influence on the future of the Tribe. In closing I would be honored to serve every mem ber should I be elected. I would do my best to treat every member with fairness and respect, so that the Tribe will continue to prosper for generations to come. May you walk in Indian Pride and beauty my tillcum. My name is Shelley Hanson. Gertrude Mercier, the little girl in the casino statue, is my great grandmother. My maternal grandpar ents are Frank and Marion Forster; my parents are Wayne and Sharon Hanson. I am passionate about the Tribe and it's ac tivities. Our growth has been phenomenal and something I am proud of. As you look at Tribal Council candidates, it's im portant to look at the experience and ability of each candidate, as well as the beliefs and values that we contribute to the Tribal community. Here are some of the ideals that I represent, as well as my qualifi cations for office. Values and ideals: Communication with members. I have par ticipated in the community forums where members have an opportunity to give direct feedback to the Tribal Council on future programs and services. The Smoke Signals is an effective communication tool, and something we can all be proud of. As tech nology changes, there are new, innovative ways to communicate as a community. If elected, I would like to look at ways that we as a community can better understand and use technology to communi cate and share ideas. Long-term financial strength for our Tribe. Our current per capita payments are successful. They contribute to Tribal households while allow ing our Tribal government to build up investment funds to ensure long-term financial stability. I want to see this balance of services and savings continue. Making a contribution to our Tribal commu nity. I have been involved in committees and task forces that affect: housing, health services, educa tion as well as the pow-wow. Each of us has an opportunity to guide our Tribal future and I would like to see those opportunities remain. Offering programs that allow each of us as Tribal members to chart our personal course of suc cess. Whether it is education or housing assistance, I want to ensure that we have flexible programs that meet the needs of the majority of our Tribal membership. Education for all ages. From pre-school through higher education, I want to see Grand Ronde Tribal members have access to any type of educational program that allows them to become the "best and the brightest" or pursue a hobby or dream that could some day become a life-sustaining career. Accountability in Tribal government. As em ployees working for a company or agency we have some accountability, and as Tribal Council mem bers we should too. The Tribal Council Ethics Or dinance ensures that Council members do not use or abuse their position. This is an important pro cess to ensure that each elected official does hisher job in an effective manner. If elected, I support this ordinance and the processes outlined within it. My qualifications for office: Education I have a Master's degree in busi ness as well as two undergraduate degrees. When I talk about believing in Education, it is because I have used our systems and see the value of educa tion. Experience I have been an employee of the Tribe for over 13 years in Accounting, Small Busi ness, and now at Spirit Mountain Development Cor poration. I understand the nature of the decisions that our Tribal Council faces, and feel capable of making informed decisions. Leadership My experience includes business management, business ownership, as well as pub lic speaking and teaching. This experience has continued taught me the value of communication in the decision-making process. I see our Tribal members feel ing left out of decisions. If elected, I will explore new ways of involving Tribal members in decisions affecting their future. Please feel free to contact me at (503) 361-2588 or via e-mail: shansonwvi.com Marcia Bolton r' "l ' ' ' . I J Fellow Tribal mem bers, let me introduce myself. My name is Marcia A. Bolton. My father is William L. Rife and my grand mother was Alice Jeffers. I would like to ex plain why I'm am run ning for Council. Two primary motives focus on issues surrounding health and education and the distribution of Tribal funds. Concerns have been voiced on a widespread basis among Tribal members regarding the last Grand Ronde General Council meeting. Many have ques tioned the way the money was going to be spent. It is very difficult to justify spending limited funds on rumble strips instead of addressing the urgent medi cal needs (such as braces for children) of Tribal mem bers. There is also a large degree of mistrust towards the accountability of the present Council members. The people need to feel assured about who is mak ing the decisions regarding where the money is as signed and verification of dollars reaching those needs. When medical benefits are being denied Tribal members in need, I feel it is my duty to serve my fellow members and restore the trust in the Council back into the Tribal community. Albert Jeffers My name is Albert Jeffers. I have a strong desire to serve on the Council. I truly be lieve that I have the honesty and commit ment to make a con siderable difference. As Council member, I will strive to bring equality to our people by dividing the state into nine different and distinct precincts with nine separately elected representatives. I would also like to see more decision making powers given to the General Council members elected. I would like to see the service area expanded to all ceded areas. This would help to serve a wider majority of the populace. I also believe that as a Council member, I would be able to increase our hunting and fishing rights. If elected to the Council, I promise to do my best to protect the rights of the people and strive to make a difference as a committed, caring, involved Council member. - 1 "' v- k - 1
