14 Smoke Signals Elder housing in Grand Ronde: construction on schedule for August The 38 (2-bedroom) units currently under construction are on schedule and getting closer to move-in time by eager tribal Elders. They are targeted for completion by August. The building exteriors are complete and ready to be painted. The interiors are in various stages of completion from insula tion to paint and cabinets. The landscaping will be the final work to be done prior to occupancy. They waiting list still has openings, with priority given to those tribal El ders age 62 and over. To qualify, applicants must meet certain guidelines. Annual income for a one person household cannot exceed $28,100, and $32,150 for a two person household. This is after certain deductions are made from gross household income. At this time, the maximum rent is $299 per month, plus utilities. Thanks go to the 1381 tribal households who returned their housing survey. This was a 64 response rate an excellent result. The last housing sur vey, in 1994, had a 39 response rate. All responses were coded and are confidential, and all actual surveys will be destroyed. The information obtained from the surveys is being used by the Authority and Tribal government to determine if current housing programs are effec tive, and to plan for housing programs and developments over the next five years. If you returned your completed survey, your voice is being consid ered in this important work. The Authority will prepare an Indian Housing Plan covering the use of HUD funding which was allocated by the federal government for the year 2000. A beading class, taught by Norma Lee, was held on March 22 at the old mealsite. Making earrings will be the next class offered on April 19. Tribal Elders are invited to participate. Native youth from any Northwest Tribe or Indian Youth Organization are encouraged to register for this tournament. The first eight boys teams and eight girls teams to sign up will qualify to participate. Tournament is open to enrolled tribal members from the Northwest Tribes and youth eligible for Title V Indian Education Program Services. Girls teams may include adult women.
