6 Smoke Signals Native artists' coDisigrarsnieiiits welcome Dear interested artists, A long-time dream is coming to pass to have my own shop featuring Native art by Native American art ists. My involvement in the Native community in Eugene with art and gatherings has exposed me to many artists and their talents. I believe the Native community here could benefit from a shop run by one of their own who understands them and what they don't want to see sold as art, namely ceremonial objects. To protect the sacred part of our heri tage please be assured I will not have for sale any of these type of objects, nor will I display plastic or foreign made goods to look "Indian." I plan to display items in an artis tic and educational way. It is pos sible in a shop like this to help bring cultures together to help non-Indians understand who we are and to break down stereotypes. Along with your work, I will include a brief his tory of who you are and a note about whether you take special orders. My proposal is that I would display your work for 60 days. This is pref erable for two reasons: 1) test the market to be sure it is in demand, 2) rotate your product to maintain va riety in the shop. After this we can decide what you would like to do next. My history in retail sales has been exten sive. Working at Southwest Journey for five years ex posed me to proper display in an ar tistic and respectful way. I've done all aspects from shipping and receiv ing to management in my 25 years of professional retail sales. I have also sold my own crafts at county fairs, craft shows, pow-wows and re tail consignment shops. I can provide a work history and references if you so desire. Please call me at (541) 431-0011 for inquir ies, or just to meet me. Appointments will be necessary for potential con signors to bring their products. I hope you'll leave a message if I'm not in and I will return your call. I am very excited about this project and I hope we can work together to make the shop a good place.
