APRIL 1, 2000 3 Smoke Signals editor moves on mmm ss$m mmm By Tracy Dugan Nearly eight years ago, I came to work for the Tribe as the News letter Editor. I was fresh out of school, and it was my first "real" job. At the time, I didn't know anyone in the com munity, and didn't know what to ex pect. But instead of being an outsider, I was welcomed into the Tribe by ev eryone I met. So, after all these won derful years, it is very difficult to an nounce that this issue of Smoke Sig nals will be my last as editor. I have decided to pursue some other things. No, this isn't an April Fool's joke. This is my last opportunity to write to you all as editor, and I want to thank you for the past eight years. I have enjoyed the chance to get to know fellow tribal members and their families. Many of you treated me with spe cial warmth and kindness that I will carry with me for a long time to come. I have made friendships I know will last a lifetime. Those of you who took the time over the years to call, write, visit me, or give an opinion about Smoke Signals, I appreciated it all. Even if you had a bone to pick with me about something, I can truly say I learned valuable lessons from that, and I learned about the importance of listening to the tribal membership. I know that the things I learned from all of you I can carry with me into the future and apply those lessons to other experiences I may have. Being a member of a tribe is a re markable thing. To actually work for an organization that you yourself are a part of; to get to know those people you serve. Knowing that you are con sidered part of a huge family. Because of my tribe, I have expe rienced a sense of contribution and service in my life I doubt I'll ever find anywhere else. I think that's a re ward very few people are fortunate enough to ever enjoy. Again, thank you all. Dear Editor, It's been quite some time since I have written to let everybody know how much I appreciate you all. Ev eryone seems to be digging in and doing their jobs. And to all of those who helped it come about. . I'm one of the Elders, so I'm more patient than the younger genera tion. I can be more patient at my age, it seems. I've never had any doubts, not even one, that things would be better for us all. It has, so much more than any of us have re alized. My only heartache is each time I receive a check. I think of my mom that she couldn't be here just a little longer to have got even a couple of checks. Her generation had such a hard time. My mother is Adalene Menard Haller. I do know if she could look down on her tribe she would be so pleased for the many children, and grand children who work and live there. My heart felt thanks for Ed Pears all, who has stuck in there through thick and thin. He's doing such a good job. I know he is truly working for the Tribe (our people). I also would like to thank Jill Jeffers, who comes to see me quite often about my health. What a joy she is. Again, I wish to thank each and every one who has worked so hard to make this possible. Keep up the good work. May God bless you all, Geneva M. Haller Handsaker Roll 64 Dear Editor, This is a special thank you. We would like to say without the help from the pharmacy, Wellness depart ment, and Dr. Molloy and staff, we would be lost. We also want to give a big and very deserved thank you to our cousin Nancy Renfro for all the help she has been. Thanks also to our family and friends for their help and visits! God bless all of you, Blanche Lillard and family Dear Editor, This is my first time writing to you. I have been doing a lot of thinking about things and reading a recent letter in the Smoke Signals gave me the idea to write this letter to you. I am writing this letter on behalf of our tribal members. I hope I'm not stepping on any one's toes be cause that is the last thing I want to do. In the Smoke Signals there was a young tribal member that wrote something that made a lot of sense to me. There are tribal members out there everywhere,, who can barely keep their heads above water and I have been there myself once. I had some one who cared enough to find any kind of job to put food on the table. These days they make it too easy for anyone to get assistance. Don't get me wrong, assistance is all right if you really need it, but don't count on it your whole life. Why should they work when they know they can have it handed to them for nothing? There are so many jobs out there if you are not afraid to work. So, that is why I really think it would be a good idea to have per capita pay ments every few months or so. If it wasn't for all of our ancestors years ago, none of us would be get ting what we are today. So, now it's time to help the young people from 18 and above to keep their heads above the water. But just remem ber, a lot of our ancestors never even saw a dime of anything. Thank you, Wilmadene Riggs Butler Roll 704 PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE 9615 Grand Ronde Road Grand Ronde, OR 97347 1-800-422-0232 (503) 879-2190 Fax: (503) 879-2173 DEADLINE DATE ISSUE DATE Wed., April 5 APRIL 15 Thurs., April 20 MAY1 wi&dem m Ufa tmtttttt ftnrerr c 3 4:00 p.m. Meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Ed Larsen.
