April 18-21 in Seattle
Indian Youth Conference
On April 18-21, the All Tribes Foundation's I-WA-SIL Youth Program is
holding it's 25th Annual Northwest Indian Youth Conference at the Seattle
Center in Seattle, Washington. The conference theme is "Cultural and Edu
cational Challenges for the 21st Century."
The conference committee has worked diligently to ensure that this will be
the finest and largest Native American youth conference in North America.
For four exciting days, hundreds of AmericanAlaskan Native youth will come
together and participate in workshops and social activities that they will find
mentally, physically, and spiritually challenging.
The focus is on the skills needed to succeed in today's high tech world, but
at the same time keeping and strengthening their cultural integrity and
identity. Activities include a Scholastic Bowl, keynote speakers, talentfash
ion show, workshops, college career fair, arts and crafts displays, banquet
dinner, Miss NWIYC Contest, reception, National All-Indian Boys & Girls
Basketball Tournament and a' tribal government symposium. In conjunc
tion with the conference is the I-WA-SIL Celebration Pow-wow, April 21-23.
If you would like more information on this conference, please contact Lisa
Leno or Dustin Harmon at 1-800-422-0232 or (503) 879-2224.
Guest speaker visits Native club
sert themselves, to choose a college
and not take no for an answer.
"Some doors will open for you, but
a lot of them you have to open your
self. It can be a lot of hard work but
its worth it in the end when you don't
have to depend on anyone to support
you and your family," Allison said.
The students had fun listening to
her story and appreciated it because
it was her story that she shared. One
student said, "I like the fact that she
didn't just say 'you need to go to col
lege.' Instead she explained the dif
ferent options and the fact that, it is
entirely up to me." In all, the stu
dents learned some new choices and
the benefits of getting an education.
Thanks to Allison for her time.
Allison Davis-WhiteEyes, Oregon
State University Indian Education
Office Coordinator, was a guest
speaker at the Native American
Clubs at Willamina middle and high
schools on February 2.
Allison shared with students her ex
periences with high school and col
lege, and the choices she had to make
to be successful. She has worked in
higher education systems for several
years and coordinates Native work
shops and conferences throughout
the Northwest. Along with her back
ground in education, Allison is also a
jingle dress dancer. She spoke of the
balance that she had to find between
the modern world and the traditional
one and encouraged students to as-
