8 Smoke Signals 02 April 18-21 in Seattle Indian Youth Conference On April 18-21, the All Tribes Foundation's I-WA-SIL Youth Program is holding it's 25th Annual Northwest Indian Youth Conference at the Seattle Center in Seattle, Washington. The conference theme is "Cultural and Edu cational Challenges for the 21st Century." The conference committee has worked diligently to ensure that this will be the finest and largest Native American youth conference in North America. For four exciting days, hundreds of AmericanAlaskan Native youth will come together and participate in workshops and social activities that they will find mentally, physically, and spiritually challenging. The focus is on the skills needed to succeed in today's high tech world, but at the same time keeping and strengthening their cultural integrity and identity. Activities include a Scholastic Bowl, keynote speakers, talentfash ion show, workshops, college career fair, arts and crafts displays, banquet dinner, Miss NWIYC Contest, reception, National All-Indian Boys & Girls Basketball Tournament and a' tribal government symposium. In conjunc tion with the conference is the I-WA-SIL Celebration Pow-wow, April 21-23. Guest speaker visits Native club sert themselves, to choose a college and not take no for an answer. "Some doors will open for you, but a lot of them you have to open your self. It can be a lot of hard work but its worth it in the end when you don't have to depend on anyone to support you and your family," Allison said. The students had fun listening to her story and appreciated it because it was her story that she shared. One student said, "I like the fact that she didn't just say 'you need to go to col lege.' Instead she explained the dif ferent options and the fact that, it is entirely up to me." In all, the stu dents learned some new choices and the benefits of getting an education. Allison Davis-WhiteEyes, Oregon State University Indian Education Office Coordinator, was a guest speaker at the Native American Clubs at Willamina middle and high schools on February 2. Allison shared with students her ex periences with high school and col lege, and the choices she had to make to be successful. She has worked in higher education systems for several years and coordinates Native work shops and conferences throughout the Northwest. Along with her back ground in education, Allison is also a jingle dress dancer.
