Smoke Signals 4 More work to Cemetery Improvements keep taking place at the Tribal Cemetery on Grand Ronde Road. A sidewalk around the covered area was installed in April. A chain link fence was also constructed in the front area to keep people from driving in that grass area. An overhang area is planned for hearses and pallbearers. With summer upon us, Russ Leno, cemetery groundskeeper, is keep ing busy with ground maintenance. We would like to remind families that mowing the grass around the graves of your loved ones is a con stant job during the summer. Please keep them decorated neatly so the grass can be easily maintained. Photo by Kim Mueller Tribe purchases trucking company The Grand Ronde Tribe has purchased a small trucking company in Wil lamina, Oregon which will be managed through the Tribe's Small Business Development Department. Although it is too early to foresee how many positions will be available in this venture. This is a separate venture from the Tribe. All employees will be company employees not tribal employees. Pay and benefits will be determined by the company. Current positions to be filled include: ReceptionistData Entry Clerk; Dispatcher; and Truck Driver. A full Council was present. GOVERNMENT MANAGEMENT, AND BUDGET SUBCOMMITTEE Gaming Commission 1999 budget approval. Val Grout moved, Bob Mercier seconded a mo tion to approve the Gaming Commis sion budget for 1999. The budget, in the amount of $691,972 was ap proved by adopting Resolution 037-99. The budget also includes two new positions. Motion carried, 8 in favor, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions. D Remodel of Gaming Commis sion building. Reyn Leno moved, Ed Larsen seconded a motion to adopt Resolution 038-99 approv ing the remodel work on the Gam ing Commission building. It includes adding two new offices, a conference room, and will cost approximately $70,000. Motion carried, 8-0-0. Community Resources Bud get. Bob Mercier moved, Bob Haller seconded a motion to adopt Resolu tion 041-00 approving the CRD budget for 1999 in the amount of $1,192,585 as outlined in the bud get package. Motion carried, 8-0-0. D Appointment of Housing Commissioners. Ed Pearsall moved, Ed Larsen seconded to adop tion Resolution 042-99 reap pointing Mel Holmes, Bob Watson, and Tim Holmes to the Grand Ronde Housing Authority. D Grand Ronde Community Re sources Center. Ed Pearsall moved, Val Grout seconded a motion to adopt Resolution 043-99 ap proving a start-up budget for the Grand Ronde Community Resources Center Food Bank. Motion carried, 8-0-0. B Grand Ronde Gaming Com missioner appointment. Ed Pearsall moved, Bob Mercier sec onded a motion to adopt Resolution 044-99 appointing Mary Mode to complete Gene Davidson's term with the Grand Ronde Gaming Commis sion. Motion carried, 8-0-0. D Appointments to Constitu tional Amendment Election Board. Reyn Leno moved, Bob Haller seconded a motion to adopt Resolution 045-99 appointing Val Sheker, Janell Haller, Bernice Jensen, and Ruby Begoni to serve on the Election Board for the special Constitutional Amendment Election. Motion carried, 7-0-1, with Val Grout abstaining. OTHER BUSINESS D Ed Pearsall moved, Bob Mercier seconded a motion to adopt Resolu tion 047-99 approving a budget in the amount of $20,000 for the ad hoc Veteran's Memorial Committee. A separate bank account will be set up for donations received. Motion carried, 8-0-0. Community Connection Clinic request for summer weather A reminder for animal owners: the weather is warming up! Please do not leave your pets in the car while attending a medical or dental appointment, as they could suffer from heat exhaustion. Grand Ronde Road clean-up The Wellness and Prevention program is seeking community volunteers for the Grand Ronde Road clean-up on Friday, May 14 starting at 9:30 a.m. For more information, please call Kerrie Jones at 879-2078. Luncheon for new moms-to-be Pre-natal moms and mothers of children under the age of two are invited to attend a free Mother's Day Luncheon on Friday, May 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Community Center. Small Business opportunity for area youth Small Business Development is seeking a group of youth to come together and form their own business in lieu of a summer job.
