4 Natural Resources Smoke Signals 19981999 Hunting tags The Fish & Wildlife Committee will hold its annual tag drawings for Bear, Elk and all ControlDamage tags on Monday, August 3, 1998. The drawing will be held at the Natu ral Resources Division building lo cated at 47010 SW Hebo Road, Grand Ronde. The drawing will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Fish & Wildlife Department will issue hunting & fishing licenses during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Fri day (closed from 12:00 and 1 :00 for lunch). It is required that you call to make an appointment at least one hour before your arrival. 1998 Tribal Hunting, Fishing & Gathering handbooks are available at the Natural Resources Division. State Hunting and Fishing Regula tions are also available. Questions regarding rules may be directed to any Fish and Wildlife Committee member or you may contact Karen Larsen at (503) 879-2376. TAG APPLICATION RULES AS FOLLOWS: Tag drawing applications must be submitted by 12:00 noon on August 3, 1998. Applications not received by the deadline will be disqualified. Applications not filled out com pletely will be voided. Applications for the general elk season MUST CIRCLE their choice for the first or second season. If both or neither choice is circled that application will be disqualified. Tags must be picked up 7 DAYS prior to the start of each hunt with the exception of general deer, muzzleloader and bow deer. Tags not picked up will be offered to the next person on the alternate list. Hunter return cards must be filled out COMPLETELY and SIGNED. Hunter return cards MUST BE RE TURNED WITHIN 10DAYS QFJHE LAST DAY OF HUNT. Failure to re turn cards will result in a minimum of a one year suspension. Tribal members between the ages of 12 and 18 must have a valid Hunter Safety Certificate. Members 1 1 years of age may apply for draw ings provided they turn 12 prior to the start of hunt. Complete only one application per category. Multiple applications will result in all applications being in valid for that individual. PHONE : New rules for 1998 please read carefully RESTRICTED AREAS: Approximately 1040 acres of Reservation land have been set aside as a wildlife enhancement area The entrances to roads 206 and 212 along the Wind River access road are gated year round to restrict vehicular traffic in the enhancement area. Only Natural Resources' vehicles are permitted beyond these gates for management purposes. Hunting in the Wildlife Enhancement Area is permitted, but the hunter is required to pack out on foot. The penalty for any gate access violation is a two year suspension and forfeiture of all current hunting tags. DISABLED HUNTERS ARE DEFINED AS IN THE OREGON STATE REGULATIONS: "Disabled hunters are catego rized 2 ways: 1) A disabled hunter is a person who is permanently unable to be mobile without the assistance of a wheelchair; 2) A visually impaired hunter is a person whose central visual acuity does not exceed 20200 in the better eye with best correction or if that persons visual acu ity exceeds 20200, has a limit to their field of vision such that its widest diameter sub tends an angle no greater than 20 degrees." ISSUANCE OF TAGS (TRANSFERRED): Tags for any given hunt will be issued one at a time. If a member is eligible for a hunt ing tag and has had an additional tag trans ferred to them by an Elder or a disabled member, the member will be issued only one of these tags at a time. The tag must be filled and reported before the next tag is issued. FISH & WILDLIFE COMMISSION ACTIONS: The commission hanged the rules to allow any muzzleloading weapon, including those with closed ignitions and scope sights, in hunts for game mammals where centerfire weapons are legal. Carified the rule regarding compound bow let-off in holding weight to accept standards as measured by Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization (AMO).
