SMOKE SIGNALS UtisED&Bs 5 Bandaid Brief By Donna Brencman, FNP Summer is coming I promise and so are the painful sunburns. A lot of people cannot wait to soak up some of those rays. If you want to tan, it is best to start off slow short amount of sun exposure, approximately 10 minutes gradually in crease the time that is tolerated and no sun burn occurs. If you plan to spend the day in the sun it is important to use sunblockers. Children are more sensitive to the sun; burning much faster and deeper. Some medications a per son is taking may cause increased sensitiv ity to the sun; burning faster and causing skin rashes. If you have a sunburn, treat the pain with aspirin, Tylenol or Advil. Wear protective clothing like hats, long sleeve shirts and pants to prevent further skin damage. Take tepid (cool) baths help to cool the skin. Do not apply oil type of lotions or baby oil, be cause they may cause skin to hold the heat in and burn deeper. You may apply oil free lotions to keep the skin soft. Drink plenty of fluids (water and juices) and rest! If large blisters appear andor upset stom ach with vomiting, you may need to go to the clinic or Urgent Care Clinic. These symptoms are a sign of deep bums and heat stroke. Be sure to ask a family member or friend to stay with you the first night, to have help if serious problems occur. YES, SUNBURNS ARE "HAZARD OUS TO YOUR HEALTH." Family history of skin cancer and re peated prolonged exposure to the sun in creases the chance for skin cancer. If you have a mole that is changing darker black color, irregular shape, growing larger and bleeds easily then you need to see your health provider soon. So be careful out in the sun (when it gets here) and have a great time. i Let's Talk Teeth By Linda Mann, RDH We had a nice turn out at the Mother's Day Luncheon held on May 10 at the Community nyy Center.
