Earnest Hof f er passes away
Earnest A. Hoffer, 79, of Parker, WA., died Sunday, January 14 at Emerald Circle Con
valescent Center in Wapato, WA.
Earnest was born January 6, 1 9 1 7 in Grand Ronde to Andrew and Lottie (Holmes) Hoffer.
He was raised and educated in Grand Ronde.
Earnest came to the Yakima Valley in 1930. He enlisted into the army in 1942. Earnest
was stationed in Scotland for one year and then returned to the states in 1943. He was
honorably discharged from the service in 1945. Earnest returned to the Yakima Valley
where he worked at numerous jobs over the years. He married Ethel Mildred Peterson in
1974. The couple settled in Parker, and were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Earnest enjoyed pow-wows, rodeos, fly fishing, camping, hunting, and spending time
with family and friends.
He is survived by his only living sister Irene Curl of Lincoln City, Oregon, and several
adopted children who live in Washington. He was preceded in death by his four brothers:
Glenn, Henry, Delbert, and Homer; and three sisters: Nora Hoffer, Gladys Hoffer, and
Alvina Wheeler.
Rosary was held Tuesday, January 16 in the Merritt Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of
Christian Burial, held on January 17, was followed by burial at the Community Reserva
tion Park near Wapato. Earnest was a member of the Yakima Tribe, but had strong family
ties to Grand Ronde.
In memory of Tyron "Ty" Ritchey
Tribal member Tyron "Ty" F. Ritchey was born October 2, 1948 in Tillamook, Oregon.
He passed away on January 12, 1996 in Olympia, Washington. Ty was the son of Emma
Riggs Summerlin.
A memorial mass was held by Pastor Father Jim Crunican on Wednesday, January 24 at
2 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Ronde, Oregon. A reception immediately
followed at St. Michael's Church cafeteria.

join dance club
The United Intertribal Dance Club is cur
rently in a rebuilding phase. We cordially
invite you to attend our dance practices and
join in this rebuilding process.
Our practices are held from 7 to 9 p.m. at
Carlos Houk Middle School, behind
ShopKo in Salem.
The classes are held on Tuesday nights
as follows: February 13 and 27; March 12
and 26; April 9 and 23; May 14 and 28; and
June 11.
Bring the family enjoy dancing, drum
ming, a chance to meet new friends and visit
with old ones!
Energy assistance
Polk County energy assistance program
will be taking applications for energy as
sistance at the Tribal Family Action Pro
gram. Because of budget cuts only SE
NIORS and DISABLED will be able to re
ceive funds from the program.
Please call to schedule an appointment
with the TFAP secretary, Pam Warren at
879-2034. You must live in Polk County
to receive assistance through this program.
Funds available for community development
The Polk County Commission for Children and Families (PCCCF) is
accepting applications for Children and Family Community Develop
ment projects. Approximately $5,000 is available at this time. The
PCCCF set these funds aside for anticipated, yet unidentified commu
nity needs for the children, youth, and families of Polk County.
Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 16,
1996. Late applications and postmarks will not be accepted.
