Staff members of the two divisions have formed a committee in charge of the project. Tentatively titled "Kwi iam Tzum Pepah" (Our Grandchildren's Pictures), the art project will promote children's art as well as educate participants about Native people in Oregon. Sam Henny, Business Development Specialist, said that the Art Project Committee will ask tribal children to submit their artwork to be on display at the tribal offices, and hopes to turn some of their illustrations into note cards, posters, banners, etc. which could be pur chased. The proceeds would then help to fund the project for next year. All tribal children will be eligible to register and submit their art. The second part of the project will focus on an outreach program for local youth. Sam said she and other committee members will visit grade schools, tell the children about the Tribe, and encourage them to submit artwork based on their perceptions of Native people. "My idea is to read the children a legend from the Grand Ronde Tribe, and ask them to illustrate what the story means to them," Sam said. Their designs will also be a part of the children's art show, and will not only provide a creative outlet for children, but prove to be an educational tool as well. "This is an opportunity to teach local children about who we are as a people, and who we are not," Sam said. "Grand Ronde Indians are not the same as the Plains Indians, Indians in the Southwest, or other Native American images kids see on television." Sam welcomes suggestions and input from parents on this project. Please call her at the Tribe: 1-800-422-0232, extension 2487 to learn more about it. Future issues of Smoke Signals will include registration forms and additional information for tribal children living outside the Grand Ronde area who wish to participate. The committee wants children and their parents to know that this is not a contest, but a way for our tribal youth to express themselves artistically and show their talents in a gallery-type setting. Casino expansion to begin Spirit Mountain Casino is preparing for Phase II expansion, which will include a steak house and lounge, banquet and meet ing rooms, a child play area, a video arcade, RV park, and expansion of the gaming space. The initial Phase II development will add approximately 36,000 square feet to the ex isting building. The expansion is required to accommodate larger crowds and to pro vide more amenities to complement the re sort atmosphere, says Dave llarjo, Vice President of Development for Spirit Moun tain Development. The steak house will seat 1 50 people, and the quality of food will be consistent with products from moderate to expensive priced restaurants. The banquet facility will accommodate 1 50 to 400 people and cover approximately 3,000 square feet. The child play area will accommodate children from infancy to 12 years old, and there will be attendants providing tempo rary supervision of children while their par ents are in the casino. The video arcade will offer games and activities for older children. The RV park, scheduled for completion this summer, is still in the design stages, but could feature up to 150 spaces for recre ational vehicles.
