SMOKE SIGNALS - December 1, 1995 Page 3 A reminder from CHS What is an emergency? Put simply, emergencies are conditions that require immediate care. These types of problems are best treated in the special setting of an emergency room. Examples of condi tions that require immediate care are: Loss of consciousness. Intense and uncontrollable pain. Severe shortness of breath that prevents you from talking. Chest pain that does not go away when you sit for a few minutes. Possible poisoning or overdose. Accident involving head injury or other broken bones. Severe or worsening reaction to an in sect bite or medicationespecially if breathing is difficult. Feelings of wanting to hurt yourself. Sudden, unexpected changes in behavior. Severe dog bites. Bleeding that won't stop. Sudden weakness on one part of the body. Contract Health requires that emergency room services be called in within 72 hours after receiving treatment. The emergency room report will be reviewed by the providers at the Tribal Health Clinic to ensure that services received were the result of a true emergency situation.
