Mall letters to: SMOKE SIGNALS, 9615 Grand Ronde Rd, Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347 ATTN: Tracy Olson Hot weather has reminded us of how scorching and dry Oregon summers can be. Mid-summer brings increasing threat of forest fires. Forestry officials predict that this year may have the highest potential of dangerous forest fires since 1 988. Tribal members who are driving the highways, going into the woods for hiking, camping, picnicking and wood gathering must be extra careful. NEW Name: OLD Address Cut out and mail to: Smoke Signals 9615 Grand Ronde Road Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347 Hot weather brings health and safety problems When hot weather strikes, people should drink plenty of water and juices; avoid strenuous exercise and exertion during the hot part of the day; keep out of the sun to avoid burning and heat exhaustion; Letters Jury 19, 1994 Dear fellow tribal members: The Lancour family will be endorsing the candidacies of Robert Haller, Ed Pearsall, and Eugene LaBonte in the upcoming tribal election. We believe that it is time for the Tribe to discuss the implementation of per capita payments for tribal members. This would seem an equitable way for tribal members, many of whom live outside of the service area, and thus have no access to the opportunities shared by those in the Grcnd Ronde urea, to benefit fairly from tribal revenues. This is an opportune time to elect new representatives to the Tribal Council. People who will look out for the interest of aJHribal members. Haller, Pearsall, and LaBonte assure us that they will do this. We support these candidates in their election bid and urge all tribal members, who are interested in equal benefits for all, to support them. The Lancour Family Marlena Lancour Novalee Lancour Ernest Lancour, Jr. Joseph Lancour Editor's Note: The Tribe operates several programs that benefit members of the Tribe regardless of location or residence, including some of the education and housing programs. On the other hand, nearly all federal programs, by federal law, are limited to members of the six-county service area. Tribal members must help prevent forest fires wear light, loose clothing. We should be especially alert for heat-associated problems with the elderly or ill. They may be less resistant to heat problems. Watch carefully for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Small children, pets and plants need special attention. All need extra water. Tots and pets should be protected from the heat Never leave them closed up in parked cars. A tiny spark can ignite a devastating forest fire. Lightning strikes set off many forest fires. We can't control the lightning, but we do have control over our own behavior. Take those necessary safety precautions in our forest The woods are our heritage - and will be a big part of our children's future.
