Smoke Signals April 1994 Page 2 Guidelines For Jr. & Sr. Miss Grand Ronde It's almost time to select a Royalty Court for the coming year. If you would like an application, please contact Debby at 879-2476 or Camille at 879-290 1 . Deadline for turning in your application is May 1, 1994. Don't miss this great opportunity to represent your tribe! The following are the guidelines for the candidates: 1. You must be single, childless, and never married. If you become pregnant, you will immediately forfeit any title, prizes, and crown you receive. 2. You must be an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. 3. Junior age category: 1 1-14 years old 4. Senior age category: 15-19 years old 5. If school age, you must be attending public or private school full-time. 6. All contestants are expected by their conduct, to represent the Tribe, their family, and themselves with integrity and gracious spirit at all times. 7. You must attend all required events such as pow-wows, parades, fund-raisers, organizational meetings, and others. Excused absences may be pre-arranged with the Royalty Committee. If you miss three unexcused required events, you will be disqualified from the court. 8. You must be drug & alcohol free. Any misconduct will result in the immediate disqualification from the court and you will not be allowed to enter again. 9. You must be willing to speak in front of groups of people. (The Royalty Committee will help with this.) 10. You must be fully dedicated and prepared to represent the Tribe in a positive way. 11. You must show good judgement by not participating in any activities that would bring adverse publicity to the Tribe while you are a member of Royalty Court. 1 2. You must be willing to dance. You will be expected to attend dance classes that are offered by the Tribe. 13. You need to make at least one article of your regalia. Craft classes are offered free of charge by the Pow-wow Committee. All girls are encouraged to attend. 14. You must have knowledge of tribal history. The Committee will help you with this. 1 5. You must have a chaperone to represent you. This can be a parent or anyone willing to share responsibilities with you. 16. Failure to meet any of the above requirements may result in disqualification from the Royalty Court. 17. Other reguired duties as assigned. Tribal Council Nominations Nominations for the Tribal Council wiU be held at the May 1994 General Meeting. Any dually enrolled member who will be 18 years of age or older by the date of the election is qualified to be a candidate. Any eligible voter may nominate from the floor at the May meeting. However, the candidate must be present to accept or decline the nomination. Council members up for re-election are: Candy Robertson, Ray McKnight, and Merle Holmes. Multi-Cultural College Fair On April 23 from 9 :00 A.M. until noon there will be a college fair at the University of Portland campus. The fair will feature keynote speakers from several local private colleges, workshops covering admission procedures, college planning, financial aid information, and multi cultural student life. Congrats To Student Kristina Freeman just received a $ 1 ,200 Board of Barber and Hair Scholarship from the Oregon State Scholarship Commission. Kristina attends the Academy of Hair Design in Salem. She has received high grades throughout her program and will finish out her program in December. Again, congratulations Kristina. Honor The Graduates Pow-wow The Graduates Honor Pow-wow will be Sunday, June 5, 1994 at the Grand Ronde Community Center from 5:30-8:30 P.M. Grand Ronde J.O.M. participants and Grand Ronde tribal members who will be receiving certificates, advanced degrees, or graduating from college, high school, eighth grade, will be honored. ABEGED Class Schedule For April ABEGED classes will resume on April 5. The schedule is as follows: Jr. Miss Grand Ronde Courtney Warren at Pow wow. HONORARY COURT RESPONSIBILITIES As a member of the Grand Ronde Honorary Court, you will be notified and invited to participate in upcoming events like pow-wows, parades, etc. Since you will be representing yourself, your family, and the Tribe, you will be expected to follow the guidelines below: 1 . You must be an enrolled member of the Grand Ronde Tribe. 2. You must be 6-10 years of age. 3. You must always show respect to your elders. (This includes respect for your parents.) 4. Listen and follow instructions. 5. Try to do your best at all times. 6. Willingness to actively participate in tribal functions as a member of Honorary Court. 7. Be on your best behavior. 9. Must have appropriate regalia for all events. 10. Willingness to learn about your culture. GUIDELINES FOR PARENTSSPONSORS 1. Willingness to work with the Royalty Court member you are sponsoring. 2. Willingness to work with the Royalty Committee on fund-raisers and other functions. 3. Ability to be responsible for Royalty Court member during functions. 4. Willingness to help Royalty Court member learn correct Royalty, pow-wow, and tribal protocol.
