Smoke Signals January 1994 Page 5 SMALL BUSINESS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NEWS Christmas Bazaar A Holiday Success Those of you who missed shopping at the holiday Christmas Bazaar on Wednesday, December 1 5 really missed a golden opportunity. Over 20 people displayed hand-made craft items of excellent quality and craftsmanship. The Tribal Community Center was filled with Christmas gift items, lovely decorations, and Christmas music. The Business Development Department would like to thank all of the vendors who came and participated, the shoppers who came and financially supported the bazaar, and all of the people who helped us set up, get ready, and clean up. A special thank you to the Maintenance Department for their help and patience with the setup. Entrepreneur Of The Month: KenLarsen By Tracy Olson In his profession, Ken Larsen has been able to travel and meet people from many different places. He's an independent contractor of log homes. Log homes are becoming more and more popular in Oregon and other states. People are having them built in rural areas to live in all year round, or for vacations and weekend getaways. Ken has helped build twelve homes in the last three years, not all of them in the Northwest. "IVe built a log home for a chicken farmer in Japan," he said. "He lived about sixty miles north of Tokyo. He is a very successful farmer, because I just returned from Hawaii, where I built him another log home." Ken has built log homes for people in Florence, Gaston, Banks, and other towns in Oregon. "I usually have one or two men working with me," he said. "I probably have over a thousand dollars worth of equipment I have accumulated over the years, but the main tools you need are a chainsaw and a sledgehammer." Ken also had to get licensed and bonded. Typically, when building a log home, the owner gets logs, windows, and roofing from an outside supplier. They can get them in what is known as a "shell package" or they can buy them separately. Then they contract Ken to build the house. He works closely with one supplier, Treehouse Log Homes, a company based in Salem. They have had tables set up at home shows in different cities in Oregon, which is how Ken came into contact with the customer from Japan. Ken began working construction in the late 1970s, when he helped his brother rebuild his house. He's also worked for Riverside Lumber company in Sheridan, which is now closed. "I'm glad to be working for myself," he said. "The owners of the house are the only people I have to answer to." Computer Training Schedule The Business Development Department is offering several computer training classes in November. WORD FOR WINDOWS: Word for Windows is an easy to use, quick learn word processing system. INTERMEDIATE COMPUTERS: If you've attended the "Basic Computers" class but need more practice before moving on, we will practice more and learn more about the basic functions of the computer. MICROSOFT WINDOWS: Windows is an easy to use "operating system" based on a simple point (at a picture) and click (with a mouse) method. QUICKEN: Are you looking for a simple, inexpensive accounting program? This is it! You can use quicken to write checks, and maintain your business personal books.
